    Wort chiller malfunction! Dammit!

This is the chiller I have.

    Wort chiller malfunction! Dammit!

It was out of the pot, but leaked out of the vinyl tube connection and down the stem. I think when I popped the chiller in the boiling wort to sanitize, it loosened up the vinyl, and that caused the leak. Need new tubing I thinks....

    Wort chiller malfunction! Dammit!

Just finished my first partial mash. Everything went semi smoothly until I chilled the wort. About halfway through chilling with my IC, I noticed it had a steady leak going right into the BK. ended up with about an extra gallon of none sanitized tap water. Ugh! Still ended up with a OG of...

    Batch sparging and vorlauf??

Is there any point in vorlaufing when you batch sparge? Cause you are stirring the whole time. Just wondering?

    Mash tun, little worried.

I added about 2-3 gallons of 180* water to my 5 gallon mash tun, mostly to sanitize, for a about one hour. Came back and checked temp, was in the mid 160's. Now, I tested this before with 120* water, and only lost about 3 degrees. But I had it full of water, so five gallons. I am doing my...

    Midwest crush rating

How about running it over with the truck?! I read on here that "crushed" grains from kits were bad, but give me a break. 50% are still intact. I'm pretty pissed...

    First partial mash, any recommendations?

I'm just going by what sparge pal says. I want to do a full volume boil and end up with 5 gallons, so assuming 0.5g mash tun loss, 1.5g grain absorption, and atleast 1g boil off loss = 3G of loss. 1.6 + 6.5 = 8.1g - 3g = 5.1g I guess I could do 2.5g in the mash and 5.5 for sparging?

Vinyl tubing and high temps question

If boiling drives off oxygen, then won't any oxygen introduced during mashing be driven off during the boil? Ill check the local hw stores to see if they have silicon tubing, if not I'm thinking of just letting it fall from mash tun into brew kettle, or maybe try to tilt the bk like its a huge...

    First partial mash, any recommendations?

Just had a 1/2 oz sitting in the freezer, figured I'd use them. Would you recommend using them in the boil at some point? Perhaps at flame out? And I haven't used this many hops before. Should I strain them out when transferring to primary?

Vinyl tubing and high temps question

To avoid hot side aeration. Some say it matters, some say it doesn't matter. I'm new the this debate, and not sure which side of the fence to believe! Btw, while it is boiling away and bubbling, isn't this exposing it to oxygen?

    First partial mash, any recommendations?

Just made my mash tun and get to try it out this weekend. 5 gallon igloo cooler with stainless steel braid at the bottom. Starting out with a partial mash kit from Midwest: Cascade pale ale 3.3lbs light lme 4lbs American 2-row malt 8oz carapils 8oz caramel 10L 3oz cascade hops US-05 safale...

Vinyl tubing and high temps question

That's also what I have heard. Can't I just skip the tubing and just open the ball valve to the mash tun and let her rip into bk? If it isn't worth the risk, ill get some silicon tubing...

Vinyl tubing and high temps question

Ok, I'm getting into all grain and I've seen a few videos that go over the process. Some say to not splash when transfering the wort from the mash tun to brew kettle as not to oxidize at high temps. Ok, fine. But can you use vinyl tubing to transfer from mt to bk? Not sure if vinyl will...

    I need help!

Don't you think "it" is a bit young to be drinking beer?!

    Ipa's and bottle conditioning...

So from everything I have read, ipa's and other hoppy beers are best drunk rather young. But most people also mention bottle conditioning for a minimum of 3 weeks. So if you are using bottles for ipa's, is it best to bump the amount of hops/dry hops used in order to maximize flavor and aroma...

    Building a mash tun

Is zinc, brass, or other metals a no-no for hardware when constructing a mash tun? or is stainless steel the preferred option?
