Attention All Extract Brewers - Harsh Bitterness and Aftertaste

why do you specifically mention extracts? is this specific to extract brewing, or is that all you have tested? it has been my experience that distilled or RO water is TOO pure for brewing unless you add minerals or yeast nutrient back to it. i used RO for making wine kits, mead and extract...

    Anyone do an earthbox?

i made a small one from an empty cat litter container. it has slightly tapered sides and is perfect for small plants. i have dwarf bananas in two of them now. this might be good for first year growing or giving them a head start in the spring in northern climates. litter bucket earthbox

Small Dry Hop addition (0.5 oz)

that was my understanding too. that's why bittering hops are added at the beginning of the boil and aroma hops toward the end. however, i recently did a double batch of american brown ale, put in separate carboys and added .5 oz per gallon of some odd hops i had to one carboy. the aroma was...

"Quik Shade" anyone use one for brewing?

you won't do that in florida in the summer! 95 degrees and 95% humidity. i usually string up a lightweight tarp to deflect direct sun and/or rain(sometimes we get both simultaneously) when you buy those, look at the specs carefully. sometimes that stated size is the width at the base between...

Need info on Banjo and Hurricane burners

i have a bayou classic SP-1 jet burner, $35 used on ebay. 20 psi reg, 185kbtu. single orifice pointed upward through a steel cylinder with a movable round baffle over the pipe to diffuse the flame somewhat. roars like a jet taking off. has a round frame that is exactly the size of my...

    Hop particles in IPA!!!!

i have the same problem. i made an american brown ale and decided to dry hop 3 gallons of it in secondary with 1.5 oz of some various pellet hops i had lying around. when i primed and bottled it, the wand kept clogging up. when drinking it, i keep spitting out chunks of hops! i don't mind, and...

    New refractometer doesn't match hyrdometer?!

complete calibration requires a second reading at higher density that you make with pickling salt and create a correction curve. cheap hydrometers, usually most of the full range triple scale ones, are not very accurate. you're better off with a set of 3 narrow range hydrometers. they are more...

    something happened to Becks

since inbev bought out AB, they stopped giving away free beer at busch gardens(tampa), a 50 + year tradition. claimed it was a family park and free beer was not appropriate. they still SELL beer, though! but not the same variety. AB was starting to have some fairly good varieties for a big...

Malkore's (not so) Ancient Orange Mead

superior compared to what? i've now made a total of ten 5 gallon batches of AOM. the original orange 3 times, with the orange replaced with blueberries 6 times and once with red raspberries. personally i find it too sweet, but my wife and many of our friends prefer it, so i keep making it...

B Brite, how does it compare?

i used oxy on a couple wine bottles with some black crud stuck int he bottoms. no luck. poured in some PBW and hot water and they cleaned right up. my PBW must have had the lid loose. it is all caked up and i have to carve chunks of it out, but it still works.

    Which Corker / Capper Recommend?

shop more aggressively. $130 and $12. shipping may make up the difference though.

    Which Corker / Capper Recommend?

with a floor corker or any iris corkers, the cork is compressed, then inserted. then it expands back to fill the neck. some of the cheaper corkers shove the cork through a conical funnel of sorts. i use use #9 x 1.5" (about 39mm) corks with floor corkers. that's what my local supplier carries...

    Which Corker / Capper Recommend?

i started with making wine and mead and more recently, beer. my first was a hand capper and hand corker. i quickly upgraded to a portuguese floor corker. i only used my two handled hand capper for occasional taster bottles. a friend borrowed that capper and cracked two bottles on his first...

    6.5 gal bucket question

i measured out water by weight, a gallon at a time and poured it in, then marked the outside with a black sharpie. if the light is just right, i can see the shadow of the marks from inside as the level rises.

My newly discovered bottle storage unit...

i've been using them for a while. mine is standard letter size and holds 4 - 6 packs loosely. 12" x 18" and 10 5/8" height. another cabinet has 11" height. none of my 22 oz bottles fit, but i have a 20 oz one that does.and i store EZ-caps in there, too. i sometimes put in blocks of foam to keep...

What form is recommended for Oxyclean?

i tried oxy in a wine bottle that had some gunk in the bottom corner. it didn't clean it but when i put PBW in it, the chunks lifted right out. only one anecdotal experience, but i'll be comparing them some more. one difference i've noticed is that my jar of PBW hadn't been used in a while...

    mash tun manifold - CVPC

i just made this 5 gallon mash tun, copied straight from our local brewing supply store's equipment. pics i've already had feedback that it should be smaller so it doesn't get too close to the walls to prevent channeling.
