i don't want to sound elitist or anything, but putting an inline fuse inside the box on the power in wire should be self explanatory. the theory of a fuse is that it's a thin wire that is calibrated to get hot and melt if too much current runs through it. (actually i don't know if they make a 9...

a prudent person would put a 9 amp fuse in the box. (maybe that's how i burned up my first one.)

depends on how much current you plan on running through it.

i cut up[ a heavy duty AC extension cord. (12 ga flat cord) and put all the connections inside a cigar box with a barrier strip. works fine.

i got a nice big shiny wooden cigar box at a cigar store for 2 bucks. plenty of room for controller, barrier strip and bigass 12 ga wiring.

    Joe's Ancient Orange Mead

i don't think it is easy to determine using a hydrometer with this recipe because the OG is only the honey solution with much of the solids locked inside the fruit chunks. there is a method using a refractometer and narrow range hydrometer that is a bit more complicated but should work...

    Joe's Ancient Orange Mead

just wait until it clears on it's own. if it isn't clear, it probably isn't done. my latest batch cleared in less than two months, but I usually let it sit in the carboy for 4 to 6 months before bottling. when it is ready to bottle, i carefully carry it to the kitchen counter and cover with a...

some do have the option of sticking the wire in (lazy electrician option), but i think that particular design does require that the screw be tightened.

my controller died last week while i was on vacation, i don't know how many days it was down. the mead and cider is prolly all right, but the cheese, yeast and milk in the freezer is probably compost. everything looks okay, display is on, but no power out to the plug. i'll troubleshoot it...

any container would work. all it has to do is keep the components fairly rigidly installed and prevent you from sticking your fingers in the hot wires. a wide mouth plastic gallon pickle jar would work. i used a wooden cigar box. i wish i had used a bigger one, though, my cord was 12 ga and...

    short airlock

I have a recently converted fridge for fermenting set to 68F. If I can find a short airlock, I can have one gallon batches stacked two high. (On one side only. I usually do 5 gallon batches, but have some test meads in the works. Is there a way to have a jug airlocked without the extra four...

    valuable refrigerator space

we just bought a new fridge and put the old one on the front porch for a dedicated fermenting/lagering chamber. currently i have it set to 68F with a PID controller with a mead and a cider in it. the freezer is at about 38 and i'll use that for storing yeast and hops and keeping a few beers...

    berliner weisse - which brett?

this recipe just uses brett C and about 2 oz of lactic acid added at bottling time for a 5 gallon batch. (then ale yeast added just for bottle priming.) i'm curious about the combo yeast pack, but i'm sticking close to this recipe for my first one. everyone there, including several BJCP...

    berliner weisse - which brett?

there was a recent club judging here on sour beers and a berliner weisse won. i was so impressed that i want to make some. i got his recipe. it is an extract using brett C. brett C is generally seasonal and our local brew shop won't have it until spring. it is available by mail from a few...

    Storing empty bottles

I don't have room indoors, so have been storing recycled empty bottles on shelves in the carport(no exterior walls). The last time I bottled, I had to clean out all the bottles. Rinsing off exterior dust was just annoying, but I had to carefully peer into the bottles to look for interior...

Show Me Your Wood Brew Sculpture/Rig

maybe that's just overkill, but two layers would create an insulating airspace. i've had plastic and paint melted/blistered from the flame when my 185kbtu burner was cranked up. i've also had a thin sheet metal windscreen warped and melted.
