Fermenting a Lager at 50 deg

It is south of winchester, north of Harrisonburg. I took a gravity reading, and it has gone from 1.054 to 1.048 after 5 days of fermentation. Is this possibly due to the low temperature or yeast. The air lock had been bubbling for 4 good days. Am I suppose to adjust my hydrometer reading...

Fermenting a Lager at 50 deg

Thanks...Ive heard that leaving a lager in the primary for up to two weeks before siphoning to a secondary is not a bad practice. What is your take on that?

Fermenting a Lager at 50 deg

My lager is at 50 deg in my fridge and it has been fermenting for 5 days now. I get 2 - 3 bubbles per minute. I see a lot of people that ferment at 55-60 or 52, but not 50 so far. Im not worried, Im just curious if other people have fermented this low and how it turned out. Im taking a...

    "Extract Taste" What is it?

From what I have read about the malt taste, and after talking to my LHBS, he told me to age it another week or two and it should go away for LME. Another thing, and Im not sure how this can affect it, but he said if people use a secondary for at least 2 weeks, no less, it will help.

Getting away from kits too early?

The other day I bought a kit from Austin, a Killians clone, just to see how good they are. Im getting it in today. If I buy separate ingredients from them, are they just as fresh? Is it cheaper to get malt extract in bulk?

Getting away from kits too early?

    My Chocolate Stout Recipe...thoughts?

Personally, it seems like a lot of oats, but Im new so take it with a grain of salt. It sounds like a very smooth and heavy brew. Hope it works out for ya!

Getting away from kits too early?

I am with you fully...you pretty much hit it on the button. And again, with doing that, I want to learn how to tweak those recipes, so that they become more personal and unique. But dont get me wrong, I know that most of that knowledge comes with experience. ;)

Getting away from kits too early?

Im looking to make great quality beer, w/o stepping up to AG just yet. I feel that getting away from kits (for the most part) and getting into recipes and then tweaking those to what suits me. Can anyone give me some good suggestions on good books that will help me learn how to make my own...

Getting away from kits too early?

Oh I fully understand the I can always go above and beyond what the kit instructions say, and thats why I am getting away from the kits and I am going to try to understand more fully by getting into brewing methods that make great beer, not mediocre beer. Here is the recipe that I am going...

Getting away from kits too early?

I really dont like the instructions on the kits. The BB Irish Stout was my first homebrew, so I can understand why they would just tell me to put the wort in the primary and then bottle and age after 1 week of fermenting, even though its not the best way. I have done a lot of reading and...

    Brewed My First Batch...Yeast prob?

At 1.020 I siphoned the beer to a secondary. I hope it clears up well. Im thinking that I'll leave it in the seconday for 3 - 5 days and try to get the gravity reading to 1.018. Sound right?

Someone should try a Banana recipe!

If you can make a pumpkin spice recipe, why not a banana spice? Bananas are a very smooth fruit that has the same soft and mushy characteristics like a pumpkin. Worth a shot..has anyone ever heard of anyone doing this or tried it themselves?

    Has anyone used these?

http://www.brewbyyou.com/prod012.gif The link above shows a pic. I was wondering if it was worth the smaller investment, before plunging into the stainless ones.
