First AG batch - Grainfather - Pale Ale

I brewed it yesterday! After some trouble getting a water source for the chiller due to the weather, everything else went very smooth. Here are my notes: I only hit 1.040 post-boil. I'm thinking I should've been in the 1.050s with this grain bill. But it's not terrible. The millet went through...

First AG batch - Grainfather - Pale Ale

Great, that gives me a starting point and I can come up with my own numbers after my first brew. I just have to figure out how I will chill the mash and I'm good to go.

First AG batch - Grainfather - Pale Ale

I've written out my mashing plan: Crush rice malts at 0.914mm Crush millet malt at 0.660mm (The very specific gaps are what I get from my particular gauge) I did buy rice hulls but I don't think I need them. Using glutenfreehomebrewing's calculations: 10 lb millet malt would require addition...

    Noob Questions - GF Specific

One more question rjmaillie, during the 104°F rest, do you circulate?

    Noob Questions - GF Specific

Thanks rjmaillie. I will be brewing with my Grainfather for the first time soon, so it's great to have some first hand tips from a gf brewer using the same system. This is the first I've heard of a 30 minute rest at 104°, so I will add that to my plan. I didn't buy any Termamyl, only AMG-300L...

Chris, do you worry about pH? Wondering if I should get a pH meter before my first brew.

Tweaks to this GF stout recipe to give it more of a "Guinness" Flavor?

Sorry, I just saw this now. I'd say leaving out the rice syrup is a good thing. The body and color were definitely better without it, but not to an extreme amount. But I bet with your quinoa, rice malts, and oats you wouldn't notice it either way.

Potential "group buy" for bulk GF grains

I'm just starting out in the all-grain world. I'll order here for my next batch!

First AG batch - Grainfather - Pale Ale

I'll take pictures and document everything. Not sure when it will be, I still have to order the grain and enzymes but I'll report back here when I get it going. Depending on shipping, maybe next weekend. I don't have plan yet for the mash temps but I'm definitely going to do the two stage...

First AG batch - Grainfather - Pale Ale

You may have seen around the forum that I've purchased a Grainfather and a MM-2 mill. For my first AG brew I want to keep it simple, so I am going for a pale ale modeled from the glutenfreehomebrewing.org West Coast Pale Ale kit. At some point I do want to try legume's method of using unmalted...

    Hello Gluten Free Brewing World

Hi Silly Yak. For a gluten-intolerant like myself, I wouldn't say cross contamination is a big issue, depending on your friend's cleaning methods and equipment. However, celiac is a more serious thing, so you should approach it carefully. If you want to steer on the side of caution, you should...

    Let's talk about enzymes

This forum is in desperate need of a sticky on enzymes for all-grain mashing. I noticed this as I am preparing my first AG brew. You guys have posted a lot of great info in different places. Let me see if I can summarize the usage of different enzymes from what I've gathered around the forum...

    Noob Questions - GF Specific

I went for it! On Black Friday I purchased a Grainfather ($200 off) and a Monster MM-2 (complete package $40 off). After two years of sorghum brewing and another two years out of the game completely, I am excited! P.S. sorry for hijacking the thread skleice.

Tweaks to this GF stout recipe to give it more of a "Guinness" Flavor?

I remember some saying that rice syrup will thin the beer because it ferments completely out. I've noticed this myself and did not use it in my current beer, but I cannot sample for another couple of days to be sure. It looks like you've got a lot of other things in there so you could probably...

You really ought to start your own blog/website Chris. Or at the very least, some kind of wiki page.

    Noob Questions - GF Specific

Thanks for the input rjmaillie. I will keep my eye on The Grainfather. I will also see what people think of the Unibrau V3 when it ships. There are also rumors of another electric system coming out from SS Brewtech soon. Interesting logic. It seems others have steered toward using less rice...

    Noob Questions - GF Specific

Jettaguy, what grains did you use? After some poking around on the electric brewing forum, I started looking at the Grainfather system. It definitely doesn't look as nice as the Clawhammer or other systems, but functionally seems like it's designed with sparging in mind (good for us), and they...

    Noob Questions - GF Specific

Thanks Legume, that makes sense. I would also steer toward millet as base and rice as specialty (I think glutarded-chris recommends this as well). Perhaps this system would be workable after all. Yes skleice, I have been following those posts too. I don't want to lose the efficiency by doing...

    Noob Questions - GF Specific

Interesting, maybe I'll have to look at more recipes. I was judging based on the glutenfreehomebrewing.org kits. Their IPA is 16 lbs before rice hulls, and their West Coast Pale Ale is 23 lbs! I wonder if they are not accounting for the efficiency that you guys are getting now.

    Noob Questions - GF Specific

Yeah, I hear you about the 220V. Unfortunately I don't think anyone makes a (safe) extension cord that I could run from my basement to my kitchen. At this point I don't think there's an economical electric system for us gluten free brewers. There are definitely options out there in the ~$2000...
