    So who's brewing this weekend?

I'm brewing cream of three crops on Saturday! Can't wait! Depending on my gravity readings taken on Friday and Sunday I might be racking my RyePA to secondary this weekend too.

Temp readings - chilling and serving

For your first question, use a sanitized spoon to gently stir your wort while chilling. It will not only speed up your chill time, but also give you a more accurate temperature reading. As for your second question...I don't keg (as of yet). I think most people use temp controlled kegorators...

Mash Lauter Tun from Coleman Xtreme 70 Quart Cooler

Thad - I like the design of your manifold, very clean and professional looking. I think I'm going to use the same setup once I pick up my cooler sometime this week. One quick question, what are the two fittings you used to connect the silicone tubing inside of the MLT? It looks like you have...

    Done with kits

Sounds good! Have fun exploring the recipe database on this site! There are lots of great recipes that people have put a considerable amount of time into. Or take some of those recipes and alter/edit them your self. No more paint by numbers!

    Methods for Taking Gravity

Most people use a piece of equipment called a thief: http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/3-piece-thief-plastic.html I've heard a turkey baster works as well. Just sanitize your thief or baster, carefully remove the bucket lid or carboy stopper, and withdraw liquid and place into your cylinder...

    Low Alcohol content

A pretty common boil off rate it seems is around 1 - 1.5gal per hour. I went with this my first full boil and ended up with a low OG (and closer to 6gal in primary). My boil off rate is closer to .5gal/hr. I think most extract recipes call for partial boils, and then topping off to make 5gal in...

    Low Alcohol content

What's your boil off rate and how much are you putting into you fermenters, and ultimately bottling bucket/bottles. You are probably over estimating your boil off rate, or over estimating you loss of water due to hops/trub.

    10 gallon paint strainers?

I used a 5gal paint strainer bag for my first BIAB and it was CLEARLY too small for my 40qt kettle. I then stopped by my LHBS and picked up one of their bags. It only cost around $5 and is big enough to fit around my kettle. I wish I would have just forgone the strainer in the first place and...

    What are you drinking now?

I'm about to brew this next weekend. I see you bottled (I'm bottling too), did you end up using any gelatin or whirlfloc/Irish moss?

    Low Alcohol content

Assuming you are topping off (and not doing full boil extract brewing) the most likely culprit is you aren't getting an accurate sample of your wort. Here is a thread detailing what could be the possible culprit...

    Fruit Beer Lemon-Lime Hefe Weizen

So you did 5 with limeade and 5 without? Did you follow the recipe exactly otherwise in regards to yeast, hops, grain bill?
  14. AVLbrewing

    So who's brewing this weekend?

To brew, or not to brew. That is the question. I picked up a new primary and secondary yesterday, and I have grain, hops and yeast ready to go. Originally I was going to brew this next weekend because the weather is going to be 65F and sunny and opposed to to 45F and rainy this weekend.

I went "pro" - What it actually takes to do so

Are you guys doing smaller test batches on the side still (like with the blonde), or are you maxed out with production?

What did you learn this week?

It helps to start planning and prepping your next brew day! If the funds and time (or SWMBO) allow try to start brewing more frequently and get a nice pipeline going! That ways you always have something to do every couple of days!

Something that has been covered to death

Starsan or some other no rinse sanitizer is the way to go! You'll never look back on those bleach/water days again!
