Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

Had a pleasant brew day yesterday. No major problems. Mash temps held fine, had an OG of 1.048, and the airlock is bubbling this morning!

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Almost done mashing my Cream of Three Crops! First cream ale and it's going to be my first kegged batch! Cheers!

    Merry Keg Birthday

I always try to support local business when I can! The kit was $199 and came with my choice of keg, duel regulator, picnic tap, lines, and a full 5lb CO2 kit. A tank exchange around here is $22 so that full tank is a nice added bonus!

    Merry Keg Birthday

Happy Early Birthday! This sounds just like me. When I first started brewing a few months ago I never thought I'd need/want kegs. Well long story short I ended up getting a keg starter kit from my LHBS last weekend. I figured one keg would suffice for awhile...Well, turns out I'm picking up 4...

Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

20L = 5.3 gallons so I'd just use the 5.5gallon recipe listed earlier in this thread: 5.5lbs Pale Malt (2-row) 2.5lbs Flaked Corn 1lbs Flaked Rice (or Minute Rice) .5oz Willemette (60min) .5oz Crystal (60min) Everything else should be the same (90min mash @152, 90min boil). If someone wants...

Temp readings - chilling and serving

While its a little more than a bag of ice I use a DIY immersion wort chiller and it works great. I just swirl my chiller around in the wort every few minutes and can chill from boiling to yeast pitching temps in about 20mins. I want to say I spent about $35 in supplies and had a fun project to...

    Fruit Beer Blood Orange Hefeweizen

11 new recipes?!? Not to derail this thread to much from the original great recipe, but want to give any clues on what you are working on? More hefs? Fruit additions to other styles? Keep up the good work!

    Lhbs

I like having self service grain and milling. Not that I don't trust the shop owners when they grind it for you or anything like that, but I actually enjoy going and scooping the grains, weighing them out, and doing the grinding. Now if I was in a pinch my LHBS would certainly prepare it all for...

    No carbination???

Welcome to HBT! Beers with high ABV% will take considerably longer to carbonate. Just a few other questions though... What temperature are you conditioning/carbonating at? If it's too low it would drastically increase the amount of time to carbonate. The ideal temp is a little above 70F. Also...

    infection????

Yeast rafts and CO2 bubles most likely. Perfectly normal. Take a look at this thread: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/post-your-infection-71400/ Lots of funky stuff in there...and equally as many pics that look similar to yours! Cheers!

    Airlock Plug in Carboy

Ya.... I did this as I was cleaning my new carboy and about to use it for the first time. After a few minutes of panic I consulted YouTube and went to work!

    What are you drinking now?

Coffee while I listen to Marines blowing up stuff in the woods. Makes for a surprisingly peaceful morning...

    What's Wrong With My Wife?

Isn't great when our wives surprise us like that? I mean it is a little unnerving at times, especially when she throws you that first curve ball. My wife is surprisingly supportive of my homebrewing adventures. I was in my LHBS yesterday talking to the owner about kegging and he mentioned his...

    Getting into kegging-ideas?

I actually just bought my first used keg kit yesterday. I ended up going with my LHBS because by the time I factored in shipping and filling the bottle CO2 it was around $20 cheaper than online. Just out of curiosity I assume you were taking that into consideration too? If not from my shopping...

    Did I pitch enough?

Would need to know you volume of wort too. But assuming you pitched into 5gal you would need 1.3pks. Use the Mr. Malty yest calculator for future reference. It will help you with how much yeast starter to make with liquid yeast, and how many packages with dry...

Took Longer Than Expected, Is That a Problem?

Did you use a yeast starter? If your yeast count was low/or old it may take longer for initial fermentation to start, but a week+ still seems a little long. What were you fermenting in? If in a bucket you may have had a slight leak/poor seal somewhere. This will make it look like you have no...

    Hops

I've been tossing mine straight into the kettle. I currently don't have a ball valve on my kettle so I end up siphoning the cool wort out, which leaves a nice layer of sludge in the bottom. If I had a valve/dip tube I'd use done sort of screen or bag though. I primarily use pellets.

Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

Brewing this on Saturday. I was originally planning on bottling it, but on a whim bought some kegging equipment yesterday. Looks like this will be my first kegged batch. Cheers!
