    Washington Hop Quarantine

Great info. I am unfamiliar with the quarantine because it hasn't made the news here. Still curious, though, has this been standard practice for Washington for a while, or is it new since the shortage of the last few years?

    new to conical fermenter

A few old threads talk about the disappointment from the Mini Brews not sealing, thereby making airlocks not bubble. Search them for details from the pros... My Mini-Brew does not have the gasket and I cannot purchase one for my particular older model, so I tried to make my own and make the...

    Wedding Mead

Agreed. I took a class last month, and the teacher talked about swingtops really only working for short term storage, like 2 or 3 years (what you bottle is what you get because, at best, you're just blending the flavors and hotness). Beyond that, he talked about mead needing the...

    Appalachian Trail Mead

Obviously there's a few different environments along the trail, but the huckleberry comment got me wondering...what berries and/or aromatics is the trail known for? Maybe focus on those flavors to commemorate things?

vacuum sealers? do you use them?

A review of sealers on America's Test Kitchen showed that the valves on the pump bags will leak over time, which I have since confirmed in my freezer with all the freezer burn on frozen fruits and meats that have only been in there a few months. They said that the quality of the real sealers...

    Grain Weevils Freezing Experiment

I seriously started to brush that bug off the screen. Then I simultaneously realized we're done with bugs for the winter here in Colorado, and remembered the subject of the thread. Then I showed the page to my gf and told her I need to check my grains, and she started to brush at the screen...

    Party pig explosion!

Great idea, Yuri. And yes, Hartski, safety glasses/keeping your face away are a great idea, especially if you don't know what you're doing. When mine blew up, I was draining multiple Pigs and was using a cordless drill to save some time. Not paying attention was my mistake. I don't think I...

    Party pig explosion!

Ha! I used mine again after 10 years, and forgot how to safely unscrew things a little to reach in there with a piece of coat hanger and pop the pouch. Yeast sediment all over the ceiling, and a bolt launched across the room. I felt like a *******, but I won't make that mistake again. Party...

Colorado brewers: Free rhizomes from AC Golden Brewing (Coors)

Got my confirmation email back from them today. I said I'm planning for trellises with 10 next year, and politely said I would love multiple varieties and however many they would like to give me. They said they'd be contacting me in April with the rhizomes and growing tips. That rocks. Nice post.

    Hilarious Intro to Fermentation

I used to WORK in a jail. Hooch there meant fruit and Kool-Aid in a freshly scrubbed toilet with crumbled up bread tossed in. Every once in a while, they would think to use a clean garbage liner or an empty jug in the kitchen, but no one ever thought to sneak in brewer's yeast or bread yeast...

    Is this cooler salvageable?

My fittings snugged right down and didn't leak a drop. And I don't know how other valves come apart, but mine isn't ruined, and I could snap the old one right back in. That was a pleasant surprise.

    Is this cooler salvageable?

I assume the logo has worn off, otherwise you wouldn't need to ask...but.... That looks EXACTLY like mine- a "Coleman Steel Belted 54" and mine is 13"x22"x16", so I think it is the same. The 54 means it's 54 quarts. I converted mine and used it for one batch with a copper manifold. Really...

    Denver homebrew shops?

Second on Stomp Them Grapes. Huge selection, decent prices, adequate website. Straight shot down the hill from you on I-70. Beer At Home on Broadway is fine, if you find yourself coming into town via Conifer/285 (285 becomes Hampden in town). Friendly and knowledgeable with a bunch of fun...

    GABF 2010. Who's Going?

So many good beers! I poured for Stewart's of Deleware in Island H, and as far as I know, I'll pour for them again on the Saturday day session (excellent selection, and a brilliant Dunkel). Look for "HBT" on one name tag, a porn star name on the other name tag (Ronald McFondle), and...
