American Wheat Beer American Wheat Beer - 2nd place Best of show - 2011 HBT BJCP competition

I brewed this up 2 weeks ago. Just checked the FG (1.010) and tasted the hydrometer sample. WOW, really tasty. I used very slightly more hops than the recipe called for (converted grams to ounces and rounded up). I am going to go ahead and bottle this batch now, I don't see any reason to let...

Why does my beer taste like cat pee?

Something like 90% of your sense of taste comes from your sense of smell. I've never tasted cat pee, but I know what it smells like, and I definitely can relate. I recently had a Founder's All Day Session IPA that tasted like straight feline urine. I've never considered citra to taste that...

    how many people use beersmith?

I do. I used it for the 21 days of the trial period and when the trial ran out I wanted to play around with designing some beers. Without beersmith I was totally lost. It's totally possible to do the math on paper using the basic formulas you can find in How to Brew but come on, it's 2013...

    Simcoe/Citra IPA recipe critique

I'm going to use a packet of rehydrated US-05. And you're right, I think 152 should be a better choice. I was rethinking it after I posted. I prefer my IPAs to be a bit crisp and quaffable.

    Simcoe/Citra IPA recipe critique

Sounds good. I'm thinking 11.5lb pale malt, 0.75 crystal 40L, 0.25 amber, and mash at 154. Thanks again for the input, this is my first time working on a recipe. I will definitely keep you posted :)

New LHBS opening 5 miles from my house!!

I'm so excited I just had to share. Currently the closest homebrew supply is a very stressful 3-hour drive away - I live in Puerto Rico and the only store is on on the opposite side of the island. I'm able to get supplies by delivery once a week, but I absolutely can't wait to pop into a store...

    Simcoe/Citra IPA recipe critique

So a couple of votes for a great looking grain bill, and one warning about the amber... How does this sound? 11.25lb Pale Malt 0.5lb Crystal 40L 0.5lb Carapils I'm interested in trying the Carapils for head retention. Is half a pound OK or should I use a little less and keep a bit of amber in...

Who is NOT going out for St. Pats day?

I'm not going anywhere. Visited my favorite craft brew store, had a couple of homebrews, washed my truck and am staying in. I have to work tomorrow, I'm not getting crazy :)

    83,000 beer can collection!

http://blog.pennlive.com/go/2013/03/midstate_collectors_jeff_lebo.html I used to have a spare closet full of interesting bottles I had collected but it was nothing compared to this.

    What does this mean?

Degrees Lovibond is a measurement of color. The bigger the number, the darker it is. 530 is very dark. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Degrees_Lovibond The other measurement you will see is SRM, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_Reference_Method

Smacked the h*** out of my smack pack (Wyeast)

I smacked the smack pack hard enough to pop the bag when I made my last batch. I sanitized the bag and pitched the yeast into the starter I had prepared within about 30 minutes of smacking. I would spray the bag down with Starsan and pitch it as soon as you can. I think you'll be fine, just...

    Simcoe/Citra IPA recipe critique

Thanks for the replies! AT-Jeff, do you happen to know the AA% of the Centennial you used? I'm basing this recipe from a recipe my LHBS created called "Parchita IPA" (Parcha is the spanish name for 'passionfruit' so this would be a 'little passionfruit IPA" based on the fruity qualities of the...

    Brewing Stress Dreams

Yes, absolutely. The week before I brewed my first ever batch of beer (all grain, to make it more complicated) I had stress dreams nearly every night. I experienced nearly every disaster possible in my dreams, including a careless relative dumping a bottle of hot sauce into the mash tun.

    Would you drink it?

    I agree, cool label!

    Simcoe/Citra IPA recipe critique

Great input, thank you. Just the type of critique I was looking for. I have never dry hopped before (and I wasn't planning on racking into secondary to do so as I only have a couple of fermenters right now).

    What are you drinking now?

Had a few bottles of my first batch of homebrew tonight. Not even sure what style it falls under. Quiet Friday for me. Bedtime!

What is the best way to remove labels from beer bottles?

Guinness bottles are my favorite because the label is just plastic shrink wrap that can be taken off with a single slit with a razor blade, and the bottles are a cool shape without any logos molded on the glass. Unfortunately the cost of a six-pack of Guinness is crazy.

    Mangled Hand

Sorry to hear about your injury and the loss of the beer. Hopefully you do recover full use of the hand despite the poor outlook with the pinky nerve. There is a thread floating around called carboy horror stories compendium. I for one am terrified of glass carboys and won't go near them.
