    Black IPA- First Recipe

Yes, more bittering hops. I brewed a BIPA some months back and mashed the Choc. malt for the whole 60min. Big mistake! You could taste the bitter astringency. Either add it to the top of the grain bed towards the end of Sparge, or steep after the boil as the previous person posted. Probably...

    grain question

Food grade 5gal buckets from Lowe's is what I use.

What are some of the mistakes you made...where your beer still turned out great!

My second batch was a partial boil recipe that recommended using two frozen milk jugs of water to cool/top off the boil. Just cut the plastic and throw these two hunks of ice in the wort and your done. Sounds easy, right? Had the first jug cut and was trying to get the ice out, when it...

Batch size and equipment loss question

Yes, DP! As far as the pump/plate chiller combo, I disconnect the hose from the kettle and raise everything above the fermenter, and just drain the last of it in.

    Conical Fermenter

First time I used mine I had the keg lid on slightly cock-eyed, allowing some gas to escape from there. Just make sure it's seated properly.

Can't decide B3 or Brew Magic

Agree, I like that setup. Do you mind sharing what the total cost was and the total amount of hours you put in?

    Conical sanitation?

I have put about 7 batches in mine, and drawn at least one sample from each. I keep sanitizer in a spray bottle, and just squirt some in the barb after I shut the valve to flush it out. Hold a small cup or paper towel underneath to catch the run-off. The Blicmann manual does advise not to...

    Brew-Magic Basement Brewery

It will be the first cold weather brew. So there may be some moisture when the cold make-up air mixes with the heat and boil vapors. Will see.

    Brew-Magic Basement Brewery

Your welcome. There has been no moisture in the hood at all. I plan to brew 15 gallons in Dec, so will see if that changes.

Can't decide B3 or Brew Magic

The BM pretty much has one model with almost all the bells and whistles. With the BS, you have lots of options. The touch screen on the BM is cool, but it is also bling and should not be considered when deciding between the two systems. The controllers on the BS should be just fine. A flat...

    Brew-Magic Basement Brewery

Natural Gas, fairly easy to convert the BM. I have done 9 batches. CO2 detectors have never detected anything. The fan is not loud by any means, but is by far the loudest thing in the brewery. Turned up all the way, about 80% of the noise is from the air rushing into the intake in the hood...

    favorite bourbons?

I still need to try Red Breast, so I think I will grab a bottle this week. A few of us went on the KY Bourbon trail a couple months back, toured all 6 distilleries plus Buffalo Trace. Makers and Buffalo Trace were the best tours by far, what a great experience. Picked-up a signed bottle of...
