    Irish Moss

mine is awful...sort of like the smell of parsley flakes. isn't whirlfloc just a refined form of irish moss? I think I might pick some of that up...I do extract brews

    Irish Moss

does the complete powerful, sour and frightening smell of irish moss have any effect on the flavor of the beer?

House of Kraus - Show us your mess

awsome! I've never had a problem with wine before but is it possible to put blow-off hoses on a one gallon jug like this?

    homemade bottle tree

nice! I might just end up doing something like that. The bread crate is cool but I doubt I'll come across one of those sometime soon. It sucks being a poor homebrewer...I'll drink one for the day I buy a keg!

    How to pronounce...

saccharification I've heard it as "sack-are-if-i-K-shun" and "saWk-Er-if-I-K-shun"??

    First now second brew...

That sounds like it would be fun but I never heard of it and wouldn't know how about going about it. I would probably just mess everything up and end up pouring a cup of coffee into my pint glass of beer. Could be good though. Coffee is good, Beer is Good, Could they be good together...

Student charged with making morphine laced homebrew

crazy chemists! no wonder my chemistry professor always looked buzzed. no, we need chemists, or else we wouldn't have beer! but it is funny how the dude didn't think it was illegal to have opium in beer. West Coasters, should've known <-----that was a joke.

Fermentation temp control with an electric blanket?

no ideas other than what you already said but, nice fermenter! does it work well?
  11. coolbeerluke

    how to chill?

never done it but, they say dump sanitized frozen bottles of water into the hot wort. As long as the plastic doesn't melt seems like it would work great. I used to set my brewpot into an ice water bath and continuously add ice, but I just made an counter-flow chiller several days ago...

    New acquisitions...

my motto is always: "if its free...I'll take it", besides -> the more carboys = the more beer.

Need your opinion on a brewpub idea.

I think that it would be a great idea. The tourism would really help the place "boom" initially and then eventually stabilize when time goes on. Be prepared for a lot of work in the beginning though. Besides, whats a town, big or small, without a brewpub??

Beer sales slip across Europe; pricey brands down in U.S.

It goes both ways. I don't think its fair to assume that all 21-25 year olds are to blame for increased prices on micros. Sure, there will always be the "yuppies" who drink micros because they make you look cool (sophisticated, different, classy), but there are also a great portion of us who...

    homemade bottle tree

Yeah, I wasn't sure about the solubility of lacquer or polyurethane...but how about an epoxy based spray paint, like appliance paint, where it dries hard and is water resilient?

Quick... you are stuck in a hotel room without a bottle opener...

I don't know if I would use a beer can. Up here in Michigan that is a 10 cent deposit. Thats a lot of money! I'd pick up a rock or somethin'.

Quick... you are stuck in a hotel room without a bottle opener...

not at a hotel, but in a field...I had a pair of jumper cables in my trunk, the teeth on those things give you a solid grip on the bottle cap, and takes little effort as there is plenty of lever capability.

    the apartment brewer

not a problem now, but I live on the mid level of my building and it gets a little toasty during summer, is there an efficient way to keep the wort cool during fermentation when it gets too hot?

    the apartment brewer

I would be more than open to brewing outside in the lot or the sidewalk actually, but how would weather and the frigid cold this time of year affect my success? I live in Northern Michigan, and it gets pretty cold. I guess I could, boil the strike water, haul it into my apartment, mash, bring...

    the apartment brewer

I suppose I could give the parking lot a try...and yes, being in college is very difficult. I can't wait to get out and buy a house with a massive garage/basement/backyard so I can brew peacefully and happily, and quicker!
