    Water Geeks Needed

I maintained professional salt water aquariums as a side business for years. I have all these kits and tons of other lab equipment and filtration equip in the basement. While I am a water geek for fish, I am still learning the beer thing.

    Water Geeks Needed

The Alkalinity or kH is CaCo3. Same as hardness in the above report. Thats not the same has bicarbonate. Bicarbonate is found by taking alkalinity and multiplying by 1.22 to convert CaCo2 Calcium Carbonate to Bicarbonate or HCo3 So my bicarbonate is 71. Based on that what recommendation...

    First Time w/ Leaf Hops

I don't have it in front of me but it's about 4 oz in boil and 4 in dry hop. I have pellets for dry hop because that's what I prefer. I got leaf to avoid stuck drains during wort transfer. Had that happen last time. No mas por favor. It's like bottling, did that once and then bought kegs. Too...

    Water Geeks Needed

I found brew friend water calc. I am making a west coast ipa and it seems my water needs a bit of sodium, a bit of mag, and some calcium for bitterness. My plan is to add 12 g gypsum to 7.3 g boil, 5g kosher salt, and 6g of Epsom for Mg. This will give me Ca around 120, Mg 20, sodium 76...

    Water Geeks Needed

I have well water and live on an old Indian Spring. My water is limitless and great tasting, but how is it for beer. Also missing seems my Bicarbonate levels. Coliforms and Fecalforms= Absent Turbidity= 0.35ppm Color= 1 Odor= N.D. pH= 6.8 Calcium= 20.7ppm Mag=1.5ppm Hardness=57.9...

    First Time w/ Leaf Hops

I am referring to IBU utilization. Word is about 10% less on leaf than pellet, but its speculation... similar to the loss for using a hop bag. Even Beersmith has a calculation on IBU efficiency depending on leaf, plug, and pellet. I use a SS braid in my BK.

    First Time w/ Leaf Hops

How much wort will leaf hops suck up and whats the best way to deal with it? I want to account for that in my volume calculations. I plan on accounting for efficiency losses as well.

I am so mad! Always calibrate Hydro

The triple was 149. Belgian blonde was 153. IPA was 156. Duvel is def a golden strong. Agreed there. Triple and many Belgians are bone dry. However, I brewed a Tripel IPA and with a lot of hops you want to have some sweetness leftover. Think about those chewy west coast IPA. So the challenge...

I am so mad! Always calibrate Hydro

I added some maltodextrine and it did make a difference. I used probably 6 oz for 5 g.

I am so mad! Always calibrate Hydro

Sorry I gave u that impression. I use secondary to clear up beers and to free up my 6.5 for the next batch, they usually get moved while there is still some fermenting to be done. Wouldn't u want this to be the case since it helps to push out any O2 that is picked up during the transfer. I...

I am so mad! Always calibrate Hydro

Ok so my belgian blonde on tap reads 1.011 on the new hydro and 10 ptnts higher on the old one. So the ten ptnts is due to the hydro breaking and in fact my readings were probably accurate. New problem. My Tripel Ipa now over attenuated. OG was 1.082 and now is 1.011, target was in the 1.018...

I am so mad! Always calibrate Hydro

If the hydro snapped and this threw off the center of gravity and makes it artifically high, then if I check one of my finished beers i measured a few weeks ago, it should be different and higher than my notes?

I am so mad! Always calibrate Hydro

I taste when I transfer to secondary. Take reading and usually give it one more week. If I was off, then I should have pulled them at this time, not waited another week as i usually get more ptnts in that last week. IE- last beer was moved to 2nd at 1.021 and finished the week around 1.009...

I am so mad! Always calibrate Hydro

The top snapped today. I replaced it today. I have not been using it that way this whole time. Do you think it was accurate and since breaking its now reading high? In which case I am getting very high attenuations.

I am so mad! Always calibrate Hydro

So I am on my fourth all grain batch. Many have turned out very thin and dry after fermentation. I cracked my hyrdro taking a reading on a Tripel IPA I just brewed. The hydro was reading a TG of 1.020 right where it should be, but it had the top snapped off. So I get a new one, a different...

    120 v heating element

Hope you all can help. I brew 5 g batches in my kitchen and I am very happy with it. I use a 10 g kettle and a 56 qt cooler for mashing. I have a ranco controller left over from some reptiles I used to keep. I use a gas range which has a powerful burner. My goal is to add a 120 v element to...

    Clone Brewing

If it's fermented. Pitch some sugar and a clean yeast. Like cal ale 1056 or safale US05. The yeast will go after the simple sugar and not affect taste because it's a clean yeast.
