    eBIAB Basket Design Help

Thanks everyone. It seems like there are a wide array of options I could go down, but the design I outlayed isn't necessarily "wrong" in any aspect. I appreciate the help!

Thanks for the well wishes! Dang man, 1/10th of a degree loss is wicked!

    eBIAB Basket Design Help

4" up on the kettle hits the 3 gallon mark. The marks are a little off though, so it's probably closer to 2.75 gallons. I usually do full volume mashes (so for a 5 gallon, 90 min boil, I put in around 7.75 gallons of water to mash in, depending on the amount of grains I'm using). That should put...

    eBIAB Basket Design Help

It looks like you're using the "j hook" type design that Utah has. Mind if I ask why you went with that option as opposed to something else? They said their U-support design was significantly more popular than the j hook design. I don't know why though.

    eBIAB Basket Design Help

My burner is 3" off the bottom. Finding some workaround with the probe would only reduce the basket by 1/2" or 3/4". But assuming you didn't already have the ratcheting hoist, and assuming you were brewing in your kitchen where you couldn't drill a hook into the ceiling, what option would you...

Yes. I typically use a javelin thermometer. I love that thing, and I find it to be very accurate. Curious that it might be the thermometer, I tested it against an analog meat thermometer. Same issue. Last brew I put in the Cube with the therm-port. I registered a 6 degree loss in 35 min (3 of...

    eBIAB Basket Design Help

How do you let it drain? I've used a brew bag for a few years, and I set up an A frame ladder over the kettle, lift the bag up, and use a clip to support it while it drains. I was hoping to avoid the need to use a ladder in my kitchen moving forward.

    eBIAB Basket Design

I'm designing an eBIAB basket from Utah Biodiesel, and considering the price I wanted a second opinion before I pulled the trigger. I have a 15 gallon Spike Kettle (dimensions attached). I got a few custom ports put on it (see attached pre-order dimensions). The bottom three ports are for the...

    Beet Gose recipe?

I had a delightful Beet Gose when I was at Small Batch Beer Co. in Winston-Salem a few weeks back (https://www.ratebeer.com/beer/small-batch-the-beet-gose-on/392962/), and would like to give it a try and homebrewing it. I saw a few other breweries that did a similar beet gose (Trophy, 10 Barrel...

Interesting. I didn't know that was a thing. Right now I"m doing full volume mashes. Last batch (yesterday) was 13 lbs of grain in 31 quarts of water, so 2.38 quarts per pound. I figured having more water per pound should have increased my thermal mass, which would have reduced my headspace...

If you don't mind me asking, why did you go with the 600 micron size? From what I can tell, most on here went with a 400 micron size. It's what the manufacturer recommends, mainly because it's the most popular. But I've used my bag for years now, and with a 210 micron size I haven't had a...

Before the wife kills me. Storing

I'm more worried about the yeast and bacteria in the water I'm using to rinse it out. I rinsed with water once, and I guess I didn't dry it out all the way. Came back to mold. I'm not interested in repeating. Maybe it is a waste of starsan. But how much am I really wasting? A few ml of...

    eBIAB recirculating system upgrade assistance

I've read some that have no problem with putting the bag directly on a ULWD element, and others that burn a hole in their bag. I've read about some that have no problem with putting the bag on the element in water only, only to have the bag burn once grains are added, and others only have...

    eBIAB recirculating system upgrade assistance

Does anyone know why the 400 micron size for a basket is so popular? I've used Brew-in-a-Bag's bag for a few years and have never had any issues with a "stuck mash" and I can mill as fine as I want. Their bag is 210 microns in size. But so many people choose the 400 micron size, as anything...

    eBIAB recirculating system upgrade assistance

Recirculating isn't the only thing I planned on using the pump for. I actually got the 1.5" port in the top of the kettle for the time when I'm ready to whirlpool, if I decided to. At the moment, I just use a spoon and stir real hard. A pump would make it a ton easier, but I can't justify...

Let me know how the basket works for you. I'm very interested in finding out if you like it. I'm leaning toward getting the Cube to start with and then getting a basket, and holding off on the pump for the time being. I feel comfortable enough to let the Cube regulate the temp with the basket...

    eBIAB recirculating system upgrade assistance

I don't think I crush my grains that fine, but no I haven't checked temps or tested conversion at 10-15 min. Every time I checked it in the past, the heat loss was fairly linear. I have no reason to believe it would have been any different in the first 15 min (2-3 degree loss most likely). But...

    eBIAB recirculating system upgrade assistance

For the corresponding previous 6 brews in Post #15, my strike temps were: 1. 160.1 (although I only hit 145 with this, had to do an emergency "lift and heat") 2. 165.5 3. 161.0 4. 165.0 5. 161.0 6. 160.7 Grain bills were all different though. Both in quantity and temp (I didn't log the grain...
