    Crystallized honey question

It depends on the type of honey and how fast it crystalized. Some honeys crystalize slowly, and the bottom can be like a brick while the top remains liquid. It can sometimes impact moisture content, causing the top layer to have a higher moisture content that can sometimes ferment (never...

Turn a Spike Kettle into a still?

@tummydoc not as bad as I was thinking. Thanks for the info

Turn a Spike Kettle into a still?

Perhaps a dumb question, but do I need to seal it? When the steam condenser is active, the weight of the lid holds it in place and no steam escapes from the lid. Probably. But I'm trying to avoid having another set of equipment lying around, if possible. Plus I'd like to reuse most of the...

Turn a Spike Kettle into a still?

I have a 15g Spike kettle I use for eBIAB. It has a 5500w heating element in the bottom, and a 1.5" TC port at the top of the kettle (used for a whirlpool arm, as well as a steam condenser during boiling). Would it be possible to add a reflux column and condenser to the top port, and use it as a...

I'm tired of getting screwed on "outdated" CO2 tanks

Agreed, but a fundamental question doesn't always result in a fundamental answer. Take for example this HBS in particular. They swap tanks. Which means if I own a tank, I can turn my tank in and get a replacement filled tank. I then own the replacement tank as a result of the like kind...

I'm tired of getting screwed on "outdated" CO2 tanks

@BruceH You're lucky. Most welding shops won't deal with a tank smaller than 20# around me. At least last time I called around two years ago.

I'm tired of getting screwed on "outdated" CO2 tanks

Exactly my thought! The first thought that popped in my head was "how are you still in business?" What size tank?

I'm tired of getting screwed on "outdated" CO2 tanks

To be clear, he wasn't trying to convince me the 12A13 was recertified without any evidence. He made the comment as he was looking over the tank, thinking there would be another stamp somewhere that evidenced the tank was retested but I had missed it. Not finding another stamp, he gave me a...

I'm tired of getting screwed on "outdated" CO2 tanks

I went back to the LHBS and handed over the tank for exchange without saying anything. I wanted to see what would happen. The owner was working. He carried the tank closer to the back, carefully inspected the expiration date, and then brought it back. He told me it expired last month, told me...

I'm tired of getting screwed on "outdated" CO2 tanks

I called a few welding shops and gas supply places in the past, but none were willing to deal with 5 lb or 2.5 lb tanks. Now that I have a 20# my options should be vastly greater. I didn't think about fire extinguisher recharging outfits though.

Kegland Flow Control Ball Lock Trouble - won't seat on keg

Morebeer confirmed a defect: They offered for me to wait for the fix, or take a refund. I offered the refund. I'm glad they gave me the offer.

I'm tired of getting screwed on "outdated" CO2 tanks

Maybe I'm slow, but I've never been able to fully understand what the dates mean. It's like Hebrew to me. Perfect example is this one I have that's now out of date. It shows "02A99" then "11A44406" then "11A53714" (in addition to a laundry list of other stampings). The "11A53714" has black...

I'm tired of getting screwed on "outdated" CO2 tanks

I'm so tired of getting screwed by homebrew shops on out of date CO2 tanks. I've exchanged CO2 tanks in the past only to find out they were out of date, and had to pay a fee. Doesn't seem right when the LHBS I'm exchanging from gave me an either outdated, or close to outdated tank. I took a...

Kegland Flow Control Ball Lock Trouble - won't seat on keg

Williams Brewing lists theirs as "KegLand Stainless Flow Control Ball Lock Threaded" while Morebeer listed theirs as "Ball Lock Bev Out w/ Flow Control (Stainless) - Flared". Seems like an "almost copied" design, although I can't tell for certain. A shame, as I thought I was getting a KegLand...

Kegland Flow Control Ball Lock Trouble - won't seat on keg

I reached out to Morebeer and this was their response: I don't remember reading that in Morebeer's description, and I'm not interested in only being able to use this with a special o-ring. I checked their website and it looks like they took the item down. I asked them for assistance returning...

Kegland Flow Control Ball Lock Trouble - won't seat on keg

The new o-ring was slightly thicker, but ever so slightly. If I wasn't looking, I wouldn't notice. The old o-ring was probably 6 months old. It worked perfectly fine with the standard plastic ball lock that was on it literally seconds before. It wasn't stiff or in need of lube. To be clear...

Kegland Flow Control Ball Lock Trouble - won't seat on keg

Well I'll be darned. The weirdest thing, but that worked. I have no idea why the o-ring I had on the keg worked with the ball lock that I had before, but not with this FC connection, or why the FC came with an o-ring for the keg post, but it seems to have worked. Super strange. But thanks.

Kegland Flow Control Ball Lock Trouble - won't seat on keg

Just picked up a Kegland Flow Control Ball Lock and I can't get it to work. In a bag from Morebeer came the FC and a o'ring washer. No instructions. I'm assuming the o'ring goes on the underside of the FC (it fits perfectly and I can't figure out where else it would go). Once I put the o'ring...

Do old grains make weak beer?

I haven't noticed "old" base malt contributing to a bland flavor, especially if sealed in an air tight container. I've let base malt go 12-18 months in my storage container so far, so I can't say I've tasted "2+ year" old base malt. But since some of the bags came from Germany, the malt was...

Brewpi help - relay won't open?

Lol, yeah, who knows. I'll keep monitoring it though to make sure it isn't something else.
