    Mashing for a starter.

I just read someone's comment of surprise in another post when the OP stated that they planned on mashing for a starter. I'd just like to give my account of doing this in this post so as not to hijack the other. I mashed for a starter for the first time two weeks ago. To date I had always...

    1st All-grain Attempt - Made Of Fail!

Cue Skwisgaar's swept arpeggio solo. Maybe you should call the beer, Drop Tuned Bb Ale or maybe, Mosh Louder Tonnes Ale. Hmmm, so many possibilities filled with metally goodness. <-Deathmetal happy face.

    1st All-grain Attempt - Made Of Fail!

Dethklok needs to do a song about your brewing experience.

    Air tight mash tun

Brew in outer-space. It's much easier and probably costs less.

    Grainy astringent stout

Thanks for sharing your pain so that the rest of us could learn from it and thanks for summing it up into three easy to remember points. I hope blending works and if it doesn't, pawn it off on your pals. They'll either drink it and not know the difference or hate it and never ask you to share...

    No Head

The caramel malts should have taken care of the head for you so in the mean time consider the following: Salt residue from the water clinging to the side of the glass will kill the head almost immediately. London has high sodium levels in its water so if you live in the Westminster that lies in...

How bottling/tasting my AG left me with more questions than answers...8

Something I forgot: It's all fine and dandy for me to throw out advice but how about giving you A SOLUTION!!!:D My best advice to any all-grain brewer who wants to really grow and learn more about their craft is to buy and read, Designing Great Beers by Daniels. It will blow your freakin'...

    coffee stout

At this point use espresso. Not coffee, not grounds, not beans but pure kick-you-in-the-face espresso. Brew it, cool it and pour it in and mix it around. So long as you don't have more than 15-20% of the grist as dark roasted grain: -1/2 oz will be noticeable but mild. -1 oz will be...

How bottling/tasting my AG left me with more questions than answers...8

Lemme tell you something I had to tell a couple of good brew buddies and try and take this to heart though it may sting a little. Quit screwing around with adjuncts, fruit and too many specialty grains and brew a couple of straight ahead beers and learn what individual grains, hops and yeast...

    Nutrient additions

Never had that problem nor have I even heard of it before and I have brewed Pils heavy wort on two occasions. Sounds more like a yeast issue (dormancy or low pitch rate) if it was solved with nutrient additives, does it not? I'm wondering what your pitching rate was and what the date on the...

missing strike water temp every time by 5 degrees.

I have failed to find this mentioned in the previous posts so I'll throw it in there for good measure even though I do not use Beersmith and speak ignorantly. Beersmith may give you a field in which you can enter the temperature of the MLT but does it give you a field in which you can enter...

HBT dictionary...or commonly misspelled brew terms

A little note since we are on Grammar: Contrary to the pronunciation given earlier, Vorlauf is pronounced For-lauf where the "au" is said like "ow", the sound you make when you hurt yourself. In German, V=f, W=v, E=ay, I=ee, J=y, Z=ts, S=z, and ss = s. The correct translated spelling is...

    Grainy astringent stout

A solution which you may have already tried: When you go to drink these babies make sure you don't disturb the sediment on the bottom of the bottle or keg. It is possible that the lack of a vorlauf left grain particulate in the beer and that is contributing to a greater off flavour than need...

    Dremel for cutting Keg

I seem to recall someone on here saying they cut out the top of their keg with a Dremel. I tried to take the top off the other day with a cutting blade on my angle-grinder and gave up after fifteen minutes of not getting through it. What exactly did you use and how long did it take? I'm...

Do you think all grain takes longer to condition and mature?

Funny that you would mention that because my ESB took longer than my IPA... the ESB being maltier of course and therefore more dependent on the grains. I would take it your wit relies heavily on the yeast and then the grain with hops playing a very minor role. This would seem consistent with my...

Do you think all grain takes longer to condition and mature?

I've noticed something with all grain versus extract and steeped grain and that is that it seems to take longer to mature. Fermentation and bottle carbonation is the same but the beer getting to that perfectly mellowed and blended flavour seems to take twice as long (2 months - 2 weeks primary...

critique my mash / lauter process

There's one thing I noticed that struck me as inconsistent and that is that if your preboil gravity is 1.040 @ 6 gallons it should be 1.048 @ 5 gallons, should it not? You cannot boil off sugar. There may be a slight oversight on your part leading you to believe more is wrong here than it...

    Connecting Weld-B-Gones and False Bottoms

I take it that the dip tube has a flared end and you've simply pushed the screen to the end of the tube, butted it up against the flared portion and secured it with the hose clamp?

    Connecting Weld-B-Gones and False Bottoms

As a side note and the end chapter of my keg plumbing adventure, I ordered my parts from More Beer as per Lil Sparky's instruction. They seem like a stand up company thus far. -They contacted me right away when I knackered up my Visa number and were nice on the phone. -They have lower...

why not use a alloy brew bot?

There was theories that aluminum could lead to the development of Alzheimer's Disease and now there are studies suggesting the contrary. I myself use SS because I find it cleans up easier but it is considerabley more expensive.
