Hop T: My new keggle strainer.

I'm debating on whether or not to exercise patience and brew a batch and drill more holes afterwards if needed or to just go ahead and do it now. My gut feeling is that it will get clogged right now because the holes are super small. I'm thinking about peppering it with a around forty more like...

DIY Wort Pickup Tube from BYO Mag

Though this is a cross-post and the OP here is an associate of mine I figured I'd stick up the photo of my pickup tube that I built today in case anyone wants to copy it.

Hop T: My new keggle strainer.

I sweat welded up a hop strainer because the ball valve in my keggle was essentially useless even with whirlpooling. I used a male adaptor to a 5 3/8" length of copper pipe to a 90 Degree elbow down to a tee with two more 3" capped lengths in it. I drilled a bunch of holes in the bottom side of...

Kettle False Bottom with All Pellets?

What if you made a huge rather rigid kettle liner out of a stiff 20x20 mesh, cylinder shaped, that when inserted was about an inch away from the bottom/sides of the pot Got it and am currently adapting it to work better. When I bought my turkey frier it had a 7 gallon basket that fit inside...

Necessity,or rather laziness in my case is the mother of all inventions.

Necessity,or rather laziness in my case is the mother of all inventions. You see, I left my carboys with cleaning solution in them for two weeks and they just sat there festering in my brew shed uncleaned, unseen and unloved. Today I bucked up and went to clean them but that yeast line from the...

Using a pasta maker to mill grain.

Well then, if it has received the blessing of the tech-diety Yuri Rage, it surely must be worth a go. Like he said, the worst that can happen is miserable failure!!! I can totally see it breaking, exploding under high revolutions or otherwise crapping out half way through a 20 pound...

Using a pasta maker to mill grain.

Using a pasta maker to mill grain.

Thanks for fixing the pic. I can set the gap to the same as the Barley crusher as well as larger and smaller. So gap size doesn't seem to be an issue. Very true, I could always fashion a hopper out of wood or... ... wait for it... ... METAL! Nathan Explosion wouldn't have it any...

Using a pasta maker to mill grain.

While making pasta with my pasta roller thingy: it occured to me that it may very well serve as a grain mill. Sure, it might not have a hopper and may not have large knurled rollers but it may work, right? If one were to hack off the crank handle so that it could be attached to a...

    Brewhouse efficiency disappointing

True, I could use to up the water content of my mash. I'll keep that in mind as it is possible that the enzymes may not have had the chance to move around a get to the starches they needed to. That's something ingrained (no pun intended) from my past experience of multi-step mashes.

    Brewhouse efficiency disappointing

I hadn't calculated my brewhouse efficiency in a long time and had completely neglected it until my last 10 gallon batch. My LHBS proprietor always states what he thinks would should have to hit your Target OG (and it always seems a little high) and I've taken his word for it up till now and now...

Green Brewing, Planting and Crazy Fermentation

Today I got up extra early and started my brew session after I had a coffee. My goal today was not only to brew a tasty 10 gallon batch of Pale Ale but to do so with minimal water waste having listened to the Basic Brewing Podcast on greening up your brew sessions. I filled my keg with water to...

ACHTUNG!!! Brew porn alert! Part II

Fly sparged keeping the level a couple of inches above the grain bed. I collected 6.5 gallons in my main kettle at 1.048 I then kept the sparge partying going by starting the main kettle boil and letting the rest of the wort lauter into my small kettle. I collected another...

ACHTUNG!!! Brew porn alert! Part III

Hit the hot break and kept on boiling for a good 15 minutes before adding any hops. Once the hops were all in, the additional wort was added and the boil was complete I cooled it all down to room temp in under 15 minutes with my immersion chiller. ... and I'm now happy to say...

    "Grainy" Aftertaste

I'm going in another direction altogether because I know, as brewers, many of us are a bit nerdy and revel in the minutia of pH, mineral compounds etc. A friend of mine had a similar problem with a Hefeweizen. I finally cracked the mystery by accident one day. It was suspended sediment in his...

It's good. But what is it, exactly?

I'd call it a Belgian Mutt Ale because of your selection of ingredients.

    Will this Grain Mill work?

Bradsul, that's fine Canadian engineering you're showing there. Would you mind telling us all which brand of Corona you use?

    Mashing for a starter.

I simply put a half pound into a pot of water at 153 F and let it sit for an hour and poured it through a seive and cooled it. It took no more than 5 minutes to bring to temp on the stove top and no more than 1 minute to pour it through a strainer into a chilled SS bowl and put it in the...
