    Hello form Pittsburgh

Welcome to a terrific forum. I'm a 'Burgh native who moved away. Pittsburgh has a great LHBS in South Hills Brewing Supply. Looks like you also discovered Midwest Supply. I'm enjoying their Wurtzberger Maibock, which I brewed from an all-grain kit in early February.

    hello all

After 72 hours, if there is still no activity, hydrate and pitch another packet of yeast. No big deal. I have been brewing for all of two years, and it has happened to me twice. The beers turned out AOK.

    Pennsylvanian wannabe brewer

I also recommend SHBS. I go to the Noblestown Road store when I'm visiting the 'Burgh. They know their stuff and the prices are AOK. Get on their mailing list, and they will send you fliers that entitle you to 10% off purchases at certain times. I live in the sticks, and wish I had a good...

    na zdravi!

I can appreciate the Czech intro. I hearken to my German/Austrian ancestry when I brew my malty lagers and altbiers. And Czech! Isn't the beer of Pilsen the most envied and copied in the world? Welcome to the addiction.

    Come and check me out!!!

Thanks for taking the time to fill out the profile. I'm a little disappointed when I read an interesting post and click on the user name to get some background on the author and ... nothing. BTW, thank you for your service to our country. My son-in-law is a Marine at Twentynine Palms, CA.

    Greetings from Northern Virginia

Good to see another Virginian in the fold. I remember my first batch, just two years ago. I made an American Pale Ale from an extract kit I bought at the local homebrew store here in Winchester. Before that first brew I read some books and thought I had it all figured out. I was confident...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Did it all yesterday, and am listening to the burbling of a blowoff tube in a gallon jug as I type this. 1. Brewed a Hefeweizen, using EdWort's recipe (that's the blowoff tube I mentioned). 2. Bottled a porter. 3. Racked a Maibock to secondary, put it in the fridge to lager. 4. Racked a...

I wish I had done Organic Chem while I was a brewer...

Thank you, lady brewer, for making this observation. I have a hard copy of Palmer's "How to Brew," and for me it raises more questions about the chemistry of brewing than it answers. I have been out of school for a long, long time, and am now reading my daughter's college chemistry textbook to...

    VA group bulk grain buy

I'm sure there will be another group buy. I don't know that mb2696 will want to sponsor it again, depending on how many headaches this one creates for him when it is all said and done. But we all like getting our grain at a fraction of the retail price!

    VA group bulk grain buy

Front Royal is even closer than Warrenton, so Corey, I will take you up on that offer. In fact, I'm in FroRo right now, visiting my grandson, daughter, and son-in-law. Dave the VA Beer Snob

    Hi from Richmond, VA

Welcome, fellow Virginian! I will mark April 7 on my calendar as Beer Day. Thank you for the historical information.

    making a mash tun

+1 to pksmitty. I have the 50-quart Igloo. I do five-gallon batches using as little as eight pounds of grain and consistently get good results. I plan a ten-gallon batch in the future, and I know I can do that because my MLT is big enough. To better insulate the top, I cut a plug out of...

    VA group bulk grain buy

Okay, I'm in for three bags. mb2696, please send me your address via private message so I can FedEx you a check. This is a great service you are providing, and I am grateful to you. pxpx14, I will take you up on your offer to pick up in Warrenton. Thank you, too. FYI, I am looking...

    VA group bulk grain buy

I'm interested, but it's a long drive from Winchester to Charlottesville. $33.39 a bag for German Pilsener malt is hard to pass up. I'm trying to get in contact with an all-grainer in Front Royal and maybe another guy in Stephens City.

I thought All Grain was cheaper??!!

Hey! Check the All-Grain forums -- there is a bulk buy sponsored by a guy in Charlottesville. I'm thinking about giving it a shot. How does this sound: 55 pounds of German 2-row Pilsener for $33.39? I tried sending you a private message about this, but your message folder is at capacity.

    Started My First AG Batch

Go for at least ten gallons on the new cooler. That is what I was looking for when I came across the 50-quart (12 1/2 gallon) Igloo cube. It works great.

    Started My First AG Batch

My MLT is built from a 50-quart Igloo cooler. I had the same problem with heat loss. The first modification I made was to take a piece of foam insulation, about 1 1/2 inches thick, and cut it so it fit into to top of the cooler, like a plug. I put a handle on the top of this foam plug. This...

Costco Kirkland Beer -- twist or pop top?

Yes, the bottles are pop-tops, they come in plain, white six pack holders, and the labels practically fly off in an OxiClean soak. Homebrewer's dream. Oh, and the beer isn't too bad, either.

Hi, from the the middle of nowhere...WV/VA/MD

Middle of nowhere, hell! You are in a beautiful, historic area. Count your blessings. Lots of homebrewers around, and there is a terrific homebrew store in Frederick, MD, not too terribly far from you.
