    question about bottle conditioning

hey, i bottled this pale ale 20 days ago. used priming sugar in bottling bucket for carbing. ran out of bottles toward the end of bottling so improvised and used a growler. kept the growler and the bottles at 68 degrees and out of the light. i thought that it might be better to drink the...

    the mash from hell

agreed! lesson learned. back to my 3.5 to 4 gallon batches. :tank:

    the mash from hell

i tried to brew a 1.5 gallon biab batch in my 64 qt. kettle using just under 4 lbs of grain. i will never attempt this insanity again. 3.5 gallon batches FOREVER. because the grain was just barely submerged, it was absolute hell trying to keep a constant mash temp. first it was too hot...

very cloudy brew with yeast flakes

i dry hopped with a hop bag for 3 days first and then cold crashed for 3 with the hop bag still in it. worked quite well, really nice aroma. oh and the cold crashing COMPLETELY fixed the haze issue. my brew was crystal clear. definitely will not skip this step with most styles.

    2 - 2.5 Gal batch - BIAB

damn i should have asked santa for one too. i get my grain at a local shop and they REFUSE to change the grain setting. i think my biab batch suffered because of it. i am going to try squeezing the bag this time. i have heard more biab brewers say that it doesn't add noticeable tannins than...

cold crashing, bottling and storage temps q

hi guys, i've successfully brewed my first biab all grain brew, which was my first homebrew in general. :rockin: got bottles hanging out in a dark spot at 67 degrees. i have a question regarding cold crashing before bottling, which i did. i know that fluctuations in a bottled beer's temp...

very cloudy brew with yeast flakes

is it ok to cold crash while still dryhopping? i am using hops with a high oil level (galaxy and citra)

very cloudy brew with yeast flakes

hello again everyone, just checked on my session ale, which has been sitting in the primary for 3 weeks at 66 degrees with us-05. added a sack of hop pellets and am planning to bottle on friday. however, it's really cloudy and there's a bunch of sediment in it that to me looks like dehydrated...

about 1000 follow up q's. my noobness will hurt your head.

follow up follow up question: do you guys have suggestions on how much hops (simcoe and citra blend) i should use to dryhop this batch and for how long? also, i am using pellets. bag or no bag? thanks

anything i could do to bump up the potential abv at this point?

i really wish i had a current gravity read. :( definitely a live and learn experience but i am just happy that what i currently have tasted pretty good at this point. btw, the batch size was originally 3 gallons but i set it for the wrong boil off amount, which is why some of these things...

get ready to laugh and then mega high five me if it pans out... this was my first time brewing. ever. did i jump tandem? nope, i insisted on piloting the plane and moonwalking out that fool with a discount parachute. :rockin: i went straight to all grain (biab) and developed a recipe for my...

i know but i was trying to keep it within bjcp guidelines. which i now realize aint happening because it is what it is at this point. dryhopping will add aroma but will it add color? also, is the ibu at this stage pretty much where it will stay or does that also develop with time in the...

attempted to check my gravity today which is day 9. i didn't pull enough liquid :drunk: i don't want to expose her any further so i am going to just leave it alone for another 10 days and then i will dry hop in my primary for 3 days. i wasn't going to secondary. these were my observations...

    noob sanitation question

i'm using us-05 and it's at 72. i know that's cutting it close but i actually like a little bit of fruity esther in my aipa's and apa's (we'll see which this ends up as hahaha)

    What is your neighborhood brewery?

5 years ago we serendipitously moved into what would be the center of the chicago microbrew boom, logan square. i'm walking distance from revolution brewery and ale syndicate/arcade. atlas, pipeworks, dryhop, spiteful, and half acre are all less than a 10 minute drive. it's a problem. :)

    noob sanitation question

hey guys, it's a bit late for me to ask this as my batch has been in the bucket for 3 1/2 days now but.... i had to put my fermenting bucket on top of a box to keep it off the floor so it's not at cat level haha however, it just dawned on me that a.) the box is made of cardboard and b.)...

how trustworthy are most recipe calculators?

thank you, yes it was in fact the post-boil to fermenter prediction that puzzled me. a loss of 1 gallon from post-boil to fermenter seems excessive, especially when biab'ing and using hop bags. there was very little sediment at the bottom. i started pre-boil with 5.10 gallons and my post-boil...

taking the homebrew plunge- please help me decide the best route!

no, i had 4 gallons after boil, which is what that program predicted. but the program said i'd have 3 gallons in fermenter, meaning i would lose a full gallon from post boil to fermenter. that's gotta be an error, right? anyway thanks for the program recommendation. i will try that one next...
