    Hops addition boo boo

I dont know if you should be worried about this. It is not even a real 'scenario' in terms of running risk of contamination, well at least not as far as brewing a few gallons of beer is concerned.

Belgian Dubbel - First brew in almost 2 years!

Im doing a batch not and I just checked on the hydrometer and accordig to promash I am getting 75% efficiency. My advise is that the lower end of the temperature scale is alright during the mash but be patient. Some people say that 1 hour is all that is needed, but if you spend an extra hour or...

    Help with an English Brown....

No, i appreciate that whn you are experimenting with things you have not done before then the results are going to get flakey. In my latest batch my brew tasted far too 'malty' but you just have to bash it down to experience since that is my 3rd batch of AG. On Promash there are different...

    Secondary Tempurature

I think 80F is ok. Admittedly it not ideal but it is still acceptable. Once you start to hitting 85-90F then yeah you are going to want some sort of cooling.

now how long till i can drink?

2 weeks is fairly normal but some folk find that 2-3 months minimum is good for them.

    Help with an English Brown....

i just harbor bad sentiment after some 'book' published by the author David Line explained that I needed to use 3 ounces of hops in my first batch. That was my worst batch ever! It did not even taste like beer it was that awful. Obviously people make mistakes and it was a mistake of mine to...

    Help with an English Brown....

On my copy of promash you are at 47.8 IBU and if your Goldings are really 5% then you are even exceeding this. 30 IBU is considered the max for a brown ale. And this is before we have even considered the addition of the aroma hops at 0 min. PLEEZE *****, DO UR HOMEWORK FIRST.

    Help with an English Brown....

Yeah, i agree that your hop schedule looks heavy for a brown but it is not 'that' bad. You could get more predictable result from using a little more black patent. I aim to do a brown ale for my next batch. You should still be ok since this is your personal preference here and that is always...

    Bad Taste

My friend made an off batch when he was 14. He used an old section of garden hosing as the siphon. 2 weeks later the batch tasted awful and had to be discarded. It was very transparent at the time that the batch was undrinkable (although my memory of this event is starting to fade). Using too...

    Why brewers yeast?

Yeast does not have to be expensive because it is used for brewing. The company youngs sell a big bag of dried brewers yeast that is reasonably cheap. I believe that using Bakers yeast for beer making is a BAAAAAAAAD idea. Mainly because the beer wont clear but other than that just because it...

    Rauchbier

www.homebrewheaven.com does a good job in explaining, with pictures, the different types of malt. For the record they also sell German Rauch Malt.

    Observations from my First All-Grain

For me, the whole process takes 4 hrs but it seems a long time. I through the spent grains into the soil and churn them into it good with a pitch fork. Makes good compost tee hee As for the immersion chiller. When you first switch on the cold water tap the water that is comes out the exit...

    A question 'bout yeast.

Alright, from my experience with wine making I have left batches alone for one month without developing 'off flavors'. If all you are doing is trying to develop a beer over 3 weeks prior to carbonating then I think the whole off flavors thing is a bit of a myth.

    primary fermentation - tastes pish!!

I find it pays if you leave the sodastream cylinder actually resting ontop of the keg under the force of gravity. This is because when I remove the cylinder I actually hear a hissing noise meaning that gas is escaping so keeping it there makes sure everything is kept under pressure. Also make...

    A question 'bout yeast.

I would think that secondary fermentation in a carboy is of heightened significance if you aim to force carbonate your beer in a keg. If you only aim to carobonate your beer by traditional methods then I would not think that a secondary is as important. At least not for normal beer, but high...

Could I double the candi sugar here?

You could always up the alcohol content by use of another adjunct such as white rice or even just use more pale ale malt. Infact I used to use 1kg of glucose with the kits when I first started getting into homebrewing. You could always try doing that too instead of using more candi

Just got it in the keg

That's the joy of homebrew. You have emptied out your keg and refilled it with the new batch. Then you have got to wait another ~14 days before you can sample your product. I would like it if you can post pictures of your setup. Mine is low budget but yours comes across as being something that...

    Dreaming of Homebrew

Hi Guys, I was wondering how many of you have been having homebrew dreams. This is basically where you see homebrew products you want but cannot even begin to afford. That is what is happening to me but I cannot be bothered to post links at the moment. I am sure you are getting what I am driving at.

    How Much Black Patent?

Ok thanks. I bought some today and was susprised that it is not actually charcoal black but is just dark brown. I've got six months until it goes out of date and there is enough to last me four batches. The guy always takes me to the back of his shop which is quite strange. I think the majority...

    Help Mold!

What you have described does not should not consitute a problem to the beer since it is not in direct contact with the mold. I think your beer will have finished primary by now. Sanitation is quite important so get rid off that moldy towel as it is just an invitation for spoilage. I think you...
