2nd All-grain brew: Better, but still some issues

Hi Brewers, I have just bottled my 2nd All-grain brew. I had some issues with the first, mainly that the alc. vol. ended up as only about 0.7 per cent! (See https://www.homebrewtalk.com/forum/threads/first-all-grain-brew-observations.657725/#post-8432010) I made some changes for the 2nd...

    First all grain brew observations

Hmm....freshly boiled water from kettle poured into cup appears as 75 degrees c...that can't be right can it?

FatDragon, Can you send me a photo of that bottling set up please? It sounds cool but I don't quite follow the description. Ta! Ross

    First all grain brew observations

Cheers for the information on correct terminology re 'steep' and the tip re oven. Yes I corrected gravity readings for higher temp so this is confusing indeed. Will brew again in couple weeks, take notes and report back.

    First all grain brew observations

    1) Mash - what temp and for how long 2) Steep - what did you steep and wat part of the process did the steeping occur? When water reached 69 degrees c I turned off heat, add grain in bag, and let 'steep' (terminology in recipe) at 66 for 75 mins (although temp dropped often so had to keep...

    First all grain brew observations

Sorry guys I meant I let it steep at 66 degrees Celsius not 75. But useful to know I should try and keep temp below that. This was recipe: https://www.beercraftr.com/1-gallon-session-ipa-recipe/

    First all grain brew observations

Hi Brewers, Some issues I had with my first all-grain brew, and some observations. Any pointers greatly appreciated. -Pre-boil SG was only 1.022 (should have been 1.060) Observation: Need to crush grain more. Also, temp kept dropping below 75 during steeping. Someone suggested I should put...

First all grain - low SG

Cheer people! All very helpful. No top-off added. Will get grain double crushed next time, as well as ensuring I have some DME in just in case I have same problem. Will try oven tip too. Ta, Ross

First all grain - low SG

Oh yes had not noticed that 1.050 / 1.065 discrepancy before. Pre-boil gravity was 1.023. When in fermentor it was 1.024. (I had just under 1.3 gallons, but volume does not matter when measuring gravity, right?)

First all grain - low SG

It was crushed when I brought it, but maybe not enough I guess. Thanks.

First all grain - low SG

Hi Brewers, I did my first all grain brew today using this BIAB 1 gallon recipe: https://www.beercraftr.com/1-gallon-session-ipa-recipe/ My pre-boil SG should have been 1.065 (this is the same as 65 gravity points, right?) but was 1.023. Way out! (I adjusted the actual reading of 1.018 as temp...

    No bubbling

Hi Brewers, I recently did my second only brew and noticed that the airlock did not bubble at all. I don't think it did on my first brew either. Fermentation has happened (there was trub in bottom and scuzz on lid). The fermentor was new too. Why no bubbling? Kind regards, Ross

    Washing bottles

Cheers for all the helpful tips people! I will get me some Star San for the next batch. Is the main risk of using chlorine based sanitiser that if not properly rinsed it would impair the beer flavour, or is there a health risk if not properly rinsed? I am guessing that the concentrations would...

    Washing bottles

Thanks all! Yes I am using municipal water (but only for rinsing - I used a mix of boiled municipal water and bottled water for the actual brew).

    Washing bottles

...or is rinsing with tap water risking contamination?

    Washing bottles

...or I will make sure I rinse Young's sanitised bottles with tap water thoroughly before use.

    Washing bottles

Ah thanks flars. I will sanitise with boiling water instead then. When I did the brew I think I stirred the brew with a plastic spoon that I had taken right out of the sanitising solution, so hope the brew has not been impaired.

    Washing bottles

Hi Brewers, I am bottling in a couple of days. I have used the bottles once before (500ml swing tops) and rinsed them with water after they were finished. My plan is to just soak them and tops in a plastic bucket in solution of tap water and Young's steriliser and cleaner for 20 mins...

Cheers. They are whole leaf. They smell citrusy / hoppy, not cheesy.
