Pressure Relief Valves, Reliability, and Conicals

Have you seen the relief mechanism on a Blichman? I'd say it's highly reliable, highly effective and dead simple. I don't see the need for anything more complex for a homebrewer. There's really no chance you could damage the conical with the way they are setup. I can't speak for other brands...

Years of Extract - What I learned during my first all grain brew

I suspect 4 hours would be a pretty aggressive target for my AG brew day. With 60 minutes of mashing, 60 minutes of sparging (10 gallon batch) and then a 60 minute boil it's already over 3 hours of just watching things work. If I can get below 5 hours I'll be very happy. That's easily...

Years of Extract - What I learned during my first all grain brew

I've been a lurker for a while around here. As with a lot of us I brewed extract initially (after one or two Mr beer batches) and enjoyed it quite a bit. As part of a basement remodel I decided to incorporate some dedicated brewing space. As such, I sold off all of my brewing gear last spring...

What not to do with silicone tubing

Were it not for the wood floors I would have considered such a reaction. The amount of water that escaped as a result of my stupidity here was not trivial. Fortunately I had a stack of towels nearby. Immediately upon bursting I was standing in a 1/2" of water. It moved pretty quickly from...

What not to do with silicone tubing

I was standing within reach of the shut-off so it didn't make a terrible mess. A little more water on the new floor than I would have liked but it cleaned up easily. The first of many spills I'm sure! It sounded exactly like a balloon popping. Fortunately the piece of tubing that went...

What not to do with silicone tubing

I've been working on my bar/brewing area for the better part of two years now. It's been an entire basement remodel with a bar/bar back area dedicated to brewing. This weekend I finally started assembling the electric brewing gear I've had for 12+ months (copying Kal's setup, with his panel)...

    Fermentation Temp - Too Hot???

You guys are pretty great. Thanks for all of the replies. I'll keep this one going and hope for an "okay" beer in 10 weeks or so. I'll give it some time to recover from this July fermentation action. Thanks again!

    Fermentation Temp - Too Hot???

I was thinking my question may be a day late and a dollar short too, Yooper. By the time I get home from work today it will have been 48 hours of mid 70's fermentation. I guess I just hope it is still drinkable. I used a White Labs California Ale yeast. I read online this morning that this...

    Fermentation Temp - Too Hot???

Good day, folks. I've got a question for you guys today on the appropriate fermentation temperature. I'm brewing up a Liberty Creame Ale from Midwest. Unfortunately (or not), this is my first brew in the middle of summer. I cooled the wort to 77ish when I pitched the yeast on Sunday...

    Who's Brewing This Weekend (3/14-16)

I've got to rack my first ever batch to a secondary and I'll be brewing a Lemon Hefe this weekend. I've got an Amber and a Raspberry Ale on deck. Spring is fast approaching and I'll need s a good stock pile of good beer....

The Glory of a Second Fridge

Locked in the mid 60's??? Around here we would call that a heater! I can't wait until it warms up and I can stop using a space heater to keep my fermentor at 70. Congrats on the fridge. If you want to save some money on electricity send me your carboys...my basement is 54 right now!
