Trying to figure out what happened

Was your thermometer accurate. I have missed the mark on a few, usually if my mash temps were off by a bit.

going ag with what i got

I use a 48 quart cooler and it has worked great. I did a cpvc manifold, but a braid would probably be equally effective.

    Who's brewin this weekend?

Bottled an oktoberfest style ale this morning, and racking an oatmeal stout to secondary and brewing a stout. 30 minutes left on the boil as I type this. I have to get the brewing in before the baby!

How much $$$ does it cost YOU a batch?

Wow, I really appreciate my LHBS. They sell 2 row for $1 a pound, but you can get a 50# bag for $38 (price jump). It took me a while to pay off the barley crusher. Specialty grains are $1.45 a pound. They are raping me on the hops though. $3+ per oz. I see you can get most for $1 oz at...

Best response to telling someone you homebrew

I remember my dad. I got really no response, but he did not seem excited. I gave him a six pack for father's day a few months later. Again, not really excited, as he did not really drink much beer. 4 hours later he called and said, "Wow, I think I will start drinking beer again". Now...

Thumbs up for Local Homebrew Store

When I first went to my LHBS, they also sent me away to read. I think the owner could sense that I had not done much resarch. I too asked myself why they would sent me away. They gave me a zymurgy magazine and pointed me to howtobrew.com. I came back a few weeks later, and am really happy...

    Siphon keeps stopping

I use the method in the post of the original poster. I just fill mine with water, and then siphon out star san. I actually use the clip to hold the end of the hose and just flip it upside down. I keep hearing others say siphoning is difficult, I have never had a problem with it. Your...

    Grolsch Bottle Score

My wife saw a garage sale with homebrew stuff in the paper. She checked it out and found Grolsch bottles. I stopped by after work and looked at them. Got 100+ and probably 75 new gaskets for $5. I am excited for this deal.

Is AG really that much cheaper then extract?

I switched to all grain a year ago. I already was setup to do full boils though. I really don't know if I have paid off my equipment, but having a crusher and buying grain in bulk is the way to go. $.65 a pound vs $1.25 adds up quick. My wife bought me a barley crusher for my birthday, so I...

    Getting into all grain

I agree with BrianP, just jump right in. I made the switch about 9 months ago. already had gotten the equipment to do full boil extract recipes, and can recall thinking that I could not fathom going to spend the time to go AG. I had recieved as a wedding present a 5 gallon rubbermaid cooler...

    Increase gravity and keep it..

Steeping grains will not add sugar, but they will help with color and flavor. They will have an impact on your brew.

    Dishwasher Sanitizing?

As long as you have clean bottles to work with, the dishwasher will work just fine. I've bottled 20+ batches this way, no problems. I use heated dry, and my dishwasher actually has a Sanitize option.
