Yes, be patient and if you're finding it hard to wait, just sniff the airlock, like all of us ;) Do tell us how it ends up, cheers

First time to use a starter

I've had luck with dry packs (signs of life within 7 hrs, with aeration) but I hear nothing but great things about smack packs and starters. You may have a convert in your midst...

    Newbie has a couple questions.

And you don't have to rack to a secondary if you don't want to. It's split about 50/50 but a lot of people will leave brews in primaries for up to a month then rack to bottling bucket. Totally up to you

    Sampling Brew during SG Tests

Yeah I love seeing how it's progressing. I think the simple smell of it that screams 'I'm Beer!' brightens my day. Awesome, thanks for your thoughts

    Sampling Brew during SG Tests

Not a big issue here, but I've been using a thief to take a small sample of the brew and measure the SG in it. My question is rather for the most part, do you keep the sample and dump it in a glass to check the brew so far or do you dump it back into the batch? I've heard you shouldn't dump...

Little things like a stirring spoon, thermometer, a thermometer strip for the carboy, either an airlock or blowoff for the carboy and patience. Cheers and happy brewing!

Food for thought - Tap Water

I had to use RO water for my old salt water fish tank, some of the purest water I've seen yet. Check into a fish store nearby, they may be able to help

Tasted my first batch today! It's beer, almost.

Right there with ya. I may be bottling mine this weekend and letting it sit for a couple weeks. I can't wait. The small samples during the hydrometer tests aren't enough!

American Pilsner - garage temps may hit 50's - problem?

I actually had a question along the same lines of thought. My amber ale has been upstairs holding steady at 68 F for a week now, still in primary. Would it be advantageous to move it to the garage at about the 40s F for a week more before bottling?

Taking a gravity reading after 2 weeks of fermenting..what is the best way?

I've been using a thief and draining that into a small cup to get a sample, win win
