    Tell me about grain mills....

I’ve ran several hundred pounds of grain through my CK and have had zero issues.

Are the horizons for home brewing narrowing?

I made a starter today for a Pilsner. I have an American wheat in the frem chamber. Beer before that was a Berliner Weiss. Before that a hefe. A stout was before that. I think I’ve made one or two IPAs in the last year.

    Random Picture Thread

My daughter is pregnant and has been sending out “the baby is [this size] now” texts all during. She’s about 30 weeks so I’m sending this to her!

    Spike or anvil kettles

I really like the Spike kettle. FWIW - I had a 15G kettle thinking I could do an occasional 10G batch but never did and felt the 15 was a little too big for 5G batches. It’s harder to maintain the mash temp, was a pain to store, etc. for me, at least, 10G is the perfect size.

What I did for beer today

Kegged my new version of “House Ale” - sample was pretty good! And mashed a 3G batch of Berliner which is sitting on the heat pad as I type.

    Pilot batch setup

I have a 10G Spike, which I love, but it’s too big for my stove. I bought a 5.5G SS kettle from Walmart and do 3.25 on my stove top using BIAB. I don’t whirlpool, though. What I do is put my SS spoon and temp probe in the last few mins of the boil to sanitize (similar to how I do my IC on...

You know you're a home brewer when?

When you’re preparing food for about 40 people for daughter’s baby shower and your wife uses your kettles, funnels, spoons etc in the kitchen!

What I did for beer today

Took inventory of everything - hops, yeast, grain, and even misc things like gypsum, BtB, etc.

What is your ratio of keepers vs dumpers?

I'm probably close to 60 batches, mostly BIAB. I've outright dumped 1 keg that tasted liked crap and poured out more than a few bottles for various reasons (gushers, didn't care for the beer, etc). I'm not saying all my beers are stellar but most have been decent drinkers and some were...

New photos. Too many graham crackers in mash

...but sometimes experiments can be fun and you’ll get surprised with a unique beer!

You know you're a home brewer when?

You leave a job you didn’t like and the first thing you do is go to the LHBS because you have some time on your hands! Man I can’t wait to make some beer!

    Brewing Withdrawals

I brew 5.5G batches outside so between winter and work I haven’t really had the opportunity to brew. My pipeline was dead and I wanted to do something so I went to Walmart and bought a 5.5G SS kettle and have now brewed 3 3G batches on the stove top over the last month or so. Heck, I may...

New Corney keg lids with thermowell

I may have to order one of those custom flexi thingies! I am moving toward 3G batches and playing around with fermenting in the keg.

When to start timer for mash??

Others may chime in here but you really don’t need a mashout with BIAB. The process/reason behind the mash out is to stop any activity while you sparge but with BIAB you simply remove the bag of grains from the wort, which effectively is a “mash out” process.

    Why doesn’t everyone BIAB?

    Yeah. With jalapeno.
  17. Murphys_Law

    Why doesn’t everyone BIAB?

This was once nothing but a bucket full of cloudy wort!

You know you're a home brewer when?

You buy a new fridge and while cleaning out the old one you find a few bottles of “mystery beer”. Well, it’s jet black so there’s a clue as to style!

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Just brewed a small batch Pils. It’s in the ferm chamber now dropping to pitching temps.
