What RPM do you run your grain mill at?

ok, so I had a little time to start building the cabinet... I've got a good portion done. To follow: cut and install the sides, doors, trim. Finish wiring the switch and cord. Build and install the chute for exiting grain and then finish work. Here are some photos of what I've got done so...

What RPM do you run your grain mill at?

So, it's turned out to be more of a monster than I intended, but in the end it's all good. I'll post pics as soon as I get back. Here's what I got: 3450 RPM 5 HP motor with a 2" pulley Mandrel with a 4" to 2" step Pulley Mandrel with an 8" pulley and a coupling to drive the grain...

KegCowboy kettle valve, DIY drain tube?

I assume this is what you were talking about. It looks as though he used a standard 1/2" copper sweat to NTP fitting (About $0.80 at the hardware store) and a few inches of 1/2" soft copper (less than a buck) and put the two together. The fitting on the tube will work fine with any 1/2"...

What RPM do you run your grain mill at?

I found a 12" on amazon for 27 bucks... it's the largest I could find with a 5/8" shaft arbor. According to the calculator that should get me down to 578 RPM. That's a little more than I was hoping for, but I think it will do. The only down side I can think of at that RPM would be shredding...

What RPM do you run your grain mill at?

Thanks for all the input. It looks as though I'll have to switch up to the 12 inch pulley in order to get it where it needs to be.

What RPM do you run your grain mill at?

I just was gifted a 5 HP 3450 RPM motor. I've got a 2" Drive Pulley connected to a 8" Driven pully on a mandrel, which I'll attach to the barley crusher via coupling. The resulting rpm is 862.5 or a .25 reduction How fast is too fast? I was hoping to keep with the 8", but if I need to, I'll...

BU3 Bombardo wow... that's kind of a downer. She (Builder Third Class, U.S. Navy) Bombardo was killed recently in a motorcycle accident along with her passenger. Far too young to die.

The stupidest comment on your beer

Female visitor looking at my brewery: you make moon shine? me: no, that's a brewery for making beer. her: ooh can I try some? me: sure, here's one you can handle (hands her 4% blond ale) her: that's really big! me: actually, it's only 4% her: (seeing a cheap vodka bottle on the shelf) so...

    Can I do this?

I did something like this not to long ago. The fermentation cabinet is still working and working well. My garage is around 45 F most of the time, but even with just two 100 watt light bulbs, I can get 4 carboys up to 80 F over a day or so. (No I don't ferment at that temp) All told, the...

    Serving Homebrew at parties

Wow, thanks for all the advice... I've been bouncing back and forth in my mind all afternoon. I'm going with glass... I used glass the last 3 years and my wife did a great job keeping up with the washing all day. I'm going to shelve my "personal collection" and head off in search of cheep...

    Serving Homebrew at parties

+1 to the award! The party is a big brewday - 40+ coming, and probably 20 have experience in brewing. We'll have 7 rigs/set ups brewing any number of batches. It's a laid back day of food and beer with the hope that a few more brewers are born.

    Your 2011 Brewing Goals

I was just going to say "All of the above"... But If I get the chance I'd like to develop a good non-alcoholic recipe... I've got a couple of friends on the wagon who used to love my brew and have asked me to attempt NA homebrew. oh yeah... all of the above too.

Show of hands: Who doesn't want to go into commercial brewing?

I've had family and friends give me the same encouragement time and time again... Even had one friend offer to help set me up financially. I know what it is to run a business - even one where each day is more like "play time" than anything else. But, when it comes down to it, I think most...

    Serving Homebrew at parties

I'm organizing for an upcoming party, One oversight - drink wear - I've got close to 20 pint glasses, so I figured I'd make a move to plastic glasses to cover the 40+ people coming. One question: 12oz or 16oz? Pros/cons?
