    Stout Tanks & Kettles Questions

I'm building my 20 gallon stout setup as we speak. Pics of the rtds I purchased are here. They are spring loaded and a bit expensive, but they fit. I got the 4 inch , but the 2.5 will probably work fine. Mine stick out a bit. http://www.omega.com/ppt/pptsc.asp?ref=PR-21SL-M12&Nav=temc03

    4500W element 240V v 220V (easy question)

My bad , Its a typo. I meant 10 gauge wire.

    4500W element 240V v 220V (easy question)

I'm not an electrician, but 16 amps is the rating for continous load, which I think is 3 hrs at full blast. A 3500 watt heater should boil 5 gallon batches just fine, and if the name plate on the pump says 1.4 amps at 240v, all should be fine. I doubt the pump starting current, even with the...

    4500W element 240V v 220V (easy question)

The load is as you've stated 4500 watts: 4500w/240v=18.75 amps The NEC considers a HWH a continuous load therefore the circuit must be sized at 125% of the nameplate value: 18.75 amps * 125% = 23.4 amps. Per code, you really shouldn't go over 3500 watts on a 20 amp breaker and 12gauge wire...

    Miller's Ale House?

We have one in Boston and the food and service is pretty mediocre. The people that work there are clueless and have served us beer AND food we did not order. Luckily we have other options, but they have an ok beer selection.

    Spa Panel vs GFI Breaker?

That spa panel is fifty amps. You will have to feed it with 6 gauge nm-b or 8 THHN wire which is expensive and very stiff to work with. Just keep that in mind.

    TRI-clamp herms coil?

Yes, I could do that. It is probably a better solution since I would actually have to finagle the herms coil around the heating element on the HLT to get it out. Just turn the HLT into a CLT and maybe throw a bag of ice in to boot. It would probably get down to 140. Like I said earlier, I'm...

    TRI-clamp herms coil?

I would tend to agree with this. I have been contemplating possibly pulling it to use as an immersion chiller in the boil kettle also, but I'm not sure if that will be neccasary in my process. The disconnects make it possible to do. I'm thinking I could immersion chill while starting to wirlpool...

    TRI-clamp herms coil?

Yeah, not a good season. I work in the area, and the funny thing is all the resteraunts and bars are having a banner year! It seems everyone is hanging eating and drinking and arriving late and leaving the games early. But here come the Pats!:mug:

    TRI-clamp herms coil?

That adapter is cool. Nice find. I will probably replace my franken boxes down the line with those. Anyway, I'm totally new to all this high tech gadgetry, so I don't have an answer for you on whether it's a real problem to consider. You could do it with this HLT with 2 pumps. One recirculating...

    TRI-clamp herms coil?

No problem. Thats why we're here. Below are the links to the encloser and watertight conduit I used. I just pulled the 10/2 wire through it. The conduit has wire in it in the picture, but that is not the case. I purchased a circle cutter from sears (20$) to cut the hole, but you will need a...

    Lurker From Boston

Thanks, I know the place well. I'll see if I can make it in Sept. I have a clam bake to go to tommorow.

    TRI-clamp herms coil?

Shipping was 305 from Washington state to Boston for all 4 tanks (fermenter not in picture) via a freight Co. Everything was in stock at the time of purchase, so it only took a little over a week to get.

    TRI-clamp herms coil?

Yes, I'm really quite happy. I'm going from 5 gallon batches on my stove to this, and it is a substantial investment. I finally pulled the trigger with Stout about a month ago and I have no regrets. I haven't brewed on it yet, but all the welds and the build quality look excellent. There is one...

    Lurker From Boston

Hi All, I've been a home brewer for quite some time and currently going from my pots on the stove to a 20 gallon electric stout tank setup. Many thanks to all who have contributed. Hopefully I can add more to this great forum and make some new brewing friends. Cheers Ken
