Oh what a difference the crush makes

Good to hear, bro! I ordered my Barley Crusher last week after a 62% efficiency too. I've been ranging between 62 and 74% and that's just not where I want to be range wise. Of course, I'm still learning too and I decided it was a good idea to fly sparge with a single braid... Sure that had...

Braided hose or Manifold? Which is better?

:off: Glad I read this. I tried my first fly sparge on Saturday and got 62% efficiency when I normally get 70-74% I bought a SS false bottom but I haven't installed it yet. Those whole 5 minutes are just too much. :)

Can I Partial Mash Wheat Malt Only?

I could be wrong here but I don't believe you can. I don't think has the diastatic power to convert itself. You will need a base malt in there too with a high enough DP to convert itself and the wheat. Maybe a 50/50 ratio.

    yeast starter

So does that mean he DOES have social grace? ;)

    yeast starter

If you have a stir plate, you are completely wasting your time aerating a starter wort. Sorry. When you aerate, you are ONLY exchanging the surface area of the wort over and over again to introduce oxygen. You are not "planting" oxygen into the beer somehow. The motion from the stir bar...

    I've done it!

Congrats man! I started with Mr. Beer in December and moved to AG in February. Less than 5 hours on your first one? Congrats!

    Do you trust your refractometer?

There is a shortcut to it at the bottom of the left-side menu. Same place. Where it says "calibrate refractometer." Same place I can update my address, etc. :D

    New 10 Gallon Herms! Pics!

Thanks, Mike. Oh, I'm going there...I just gotta get parts. Are you brewing before the Big Brew Day? I plan on brewing next weekend. I'm building my Octobomb IPA at the moment.

    Do you trust your refractometer?

The GOOD news is that now that I know my hydrometer is jacked by .003, My OG numbers (which have been typically .002 over on style parameters) are now adjusted into style guidelines. And I am running at 70% efficiency, which is what I was aiming for.
  10. BigNastyBrew

    Do you trust your refractometer?

Well, I just discovered that my hydrometer reads 1.003 on distilled water (temp already adjusted). Therefore, the reading is closer, I think. 8 brix is now 1.029. That sound better? The higher OG was probably from the Lactose I added at 5 minutes. So, my OG was really 1.059 (after the deduction...

    Do you trust your refractometer?

Good call on the ATC. Didn't know that. After I got a JACKED up reading on my first AG for SG, I've been very cautious to stir the hell out of it before taking a reading but I guess there is always a chance that it wasn't enough...although I hit the target SG. Then I chill the sample to get...

    New 10 Gallon Herms! Pics!

:D Too funny. I've fallen victim to the "because they said so" stuff that never worked out... Especially from an LHBS guy that talked me out of rice hulls on my first hefeweizen.
  13. BigNastyBrew

    Do you trust your refractometer?

Here is my process: Purchased distilled water. Put some in a hydrometer tube and got it to 68° Put some on the lens and adjusted the screw down to 0% Brix. On brew day: took SG at 1.032. took refractomer reading at 8% Brix Entered those values into Beer Smith to store. You said "degree and...

    Do you trust your refractometer?

Hydrometer or Refractometer? My "fermenting beer" corrected refract reading is 1.012 while my hydrometer reading is 1.019 on my Ordinary Bitter (only 3 days into fermentation). For the Stout, the hydro says 1.024 but the refractometer (adjusted to "fermenting beer") says 1.017... This...

    New 10 Gallon Herms! Pics!

Yeah, I don't know why that dude kept talking about the whirlpool chiller. That's not how the show normally goes. I think he just wanted to feel like he was contributing. :) While I personally will continue to chill (at least to 68-70°), I'm interested to see a side by side of your results...

    /Cheers from Phx AZ

Welcome aboard, brotha man! You at Luke? I'm just down the road on Dysart/McDowell. I brew damn near every weekend. Next weekend I'll be brewing again. Lots of knowledge on here. There's a local group on this site as well called Phoenix BATF. Look us up.

Also wondering how this turned out, Pol. I've listened to this podcast a couple times now and they definitely advise against it pretty heavily. Great thread. Congrats on your success with this setup.

    IPA Brewday

I'm doing 1.3 and am getting 74% pretty consistently. I'd like to keep it there cause I know what to expect from the brewing process now. I don't know what I'd do with increased efficiency. :)
  19. BigNastyBrew

    enough yeast

If you're not comfortable with it yet, don't do it. I've been talked into doing things too early and regretted it. but if you are ready, make sure your starter size is appropriate to the age of the yeast and the gravity of the final beer. mrmalty.com will help you. That site will also tell you...
