Spritzer that once was for showers - brewday

Its my brewday today. And I'm lower on sanitizer than I thought. I have this spritzer I've kept reserved for today - it once has eco-friendly shower spray in it. I've washed it dozens of times inside, in boiling water, in washing up liquid, but it still has a [tiny] whiff of that clinical shower...

Appropriate time to add a campden tab on brewday?

I've been looking into when people are using campden tablets and various other means to remove chlorine / chloramine for extract brews. Some are adding a tab to water before steeping and boiling Some are adding a tab just before pitching yeast. I'm leaning toward adding one to all of my...

    Tasting off-flavours

Are you doing full-boil extracts or topping up? If you were doing full-boil, chlorine shouldn't be an issue as the boiling process removes relatively the majority of the chlorine

    Reliable thermometers!

So I broke my trusty mercury thermo, and I was thinking of getting a digital on-the-cheap to replace it. Something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Candy-Jam-Sugar-Deep-Fry-Kitchen-Temperature-Thermometer-Holder-FAST-DELIVERY-/400375403747?pt=UK_Kitchen_Accessories&hash=item5d383bd4e3...

    Burton-esque EPA Clone recipe

Precisely. Im using 2 x 2.4kw elements, electric brewing, so you can imagine the boil off is substantial. Thanks for the tips anyways!

Also, what do you suggest I replace that 225g of crystal with?

    Burton-esque EPA Clone recipe

Forgot to add my volumes didn't I! It would all make much more sense! I am aiming for a 7.7gal pre-boil volume and yes, a final batch of 6 gal.

    Burton-esque EPA Clone recipe

Well...I live in an area in the UK with hard chlorinated water. Never used campden tabs before, but figured they are the only way to get it out And thanks for the yeast tip! And yes, I have a kettle capable of boiling that up, I will be doing a practice run to calc. boil off. I estimated...

    Burton-esque EPA Clone recipe

Hey folks, got my next brew here I just wanted to run it past you see if you think its ok. This is basically a Burton EPA clone, but I made some adjustments because I'm going full boil extract on this one! (never gone full boil before) Quite low bitterness on this one. OG 1.042 FG 1.012 3.9%...

Straining Wort into Primary Fermentation Bucket

Regurgitating this thread, again, I would love to purchase this but really need to rack all your brains! I have a 14" diameter fem, this strainer fits 12" which sucks. Any ideas on what I could add to extend the diameter of the strainer by 2"?

Straining Wort into Primary Fermentation Bucket

While I remember, how do you sanitize this for straining cooled wort? I've always thrown nylon bags out after 1 use, and although I'm extremely tempted, how do you clean the mesh right up to the plastic?

Straining Wort into Primary Fermentation Bucket

jungatheart - I like this. Not seen it before. I'm presuming your pour your cooled wort into this then lift of the top mesh grid and dump? So cheap too! At least in the uk this would pay for itself instead of continued nylon bag purchases

Full boil / ale pail / heating element

I could, but that is another $50. ;) I'm trying to maintain a delicate balance between improving the quality of my beer and keeping costs as minimal as possible. Also, this around 1:20 are the elements, and around 15:00 is a rolling boil in progress...

Full boil / ale pail / heating element

I think it might be possible, after some research if the bucket is good quality polyprop. I was just checking out the different grades of pp off a plastics grading site, the majority all have the word 'kettle' listed in the applicable uses section. I think its really down to thickness. Time for...

Full boil / ale pail / heating element

Would love to go full boil for my second batch. I have the UK equivalent of an ale pail primary I've seen a few videos where brewers have installed heating elements into the bottom of the pail and done a full boil straight in the bucket then strained it over into another ferm. Is this safe...

I sure can! I threw it up in Photoshop a few weeks back. Its dead basic, you know, budget and all ;)

I do not! An EPA for Early next year is in the works, as well as a clone of a porter recipe i found called Full moon.

Lessons learned with your first brew?

Another thing to add is a fermentor of 5 gallons aint' light! Next time, I'm going to move my ferm to its cupboard home where it will be for the next three weeks, then add cooled wort and top up water (extract, obviously), instead of adding my liquids in the kitchen and then hiring a JCB...

Lessons learned with your first brew?

When siphoning from ferm to bottling bucket, I propped the ferm at an angle with a reasonably thick book before I started. Preferably a bible, just for irony. So glad I did this, no faffing about with the last 1/2 litre or so

    A Thankyou

From me to the seasonal experts here at HBT! My 1st homebrew was a total success and have cracked open my first after 30 days. None of this would have been accomplished without your fine advice and ridiculous patience with questions you've heard 758,000 times before. I also think the...
