New to Electric brewing - 5 gallon setup questions

That's very true, a dryer outlet is all you need and you're in business. A range outlet is typically a lot bigger than 30A, so I suppose that could somehow be used too, but I don't know the specifics.

New to Electric brewing - 5 gallon setup questions

In my opinion it would be better to wait until you have the ability to use 240V/30A service. A 20A 120v circuit could be used I suppose but you'd really be maxing out the circuit and it would have to be dedicated anyway. You wouldn't be able to use a very big heating element on that type of...

    Green Beer after Kegging...

I usually don't keg until at least 3-5 weeks of fermentation is over. It depends on how long primary fermentation lasts and how long I want to leave the beer on the dry hops. I've done cold crashing before, and I was happy with the results, but I don't have the refrigerator space to do this...

    Green Beer after Kegging...

Does anyone else notice that it takes a good 3-4 weeks before that green beer flavor goes away after kegging a beer? It seems like it takes forever! I kegged a beer on Aug 24 and it still isn't fully "ripe" at least to my tastes. Its fully carbonated and good otherwise, but its way too yeasty...

    NattyBrew's Electric Brewery Build

I can answer that one. I have the same controller and a similar system. On a 5 gallon batch I usually only need to have the element set to 55% for a good strong boil. I've never done a 10 gallon batch so I don't know what you would need for that but I'm sure it wouldn't be 100% The only time...

I'm done with brewing. All my beers taste like ****

RO systems are reasonably cheap in my opinion. Although I don't think RO is really required. I used to have an RO system from my previous reef aquarium hobby, but now I just use a 3 stage carbon filter system instead. I got all of my stuff from here: www.thefilterguys.biz

    Wine Making 101?

Thanks Yooper! I'll definitely check out that site. I'm going to try to keep it as simple as possible. I'll probably invite over some friends for a grape crushing party when its time to crush it all. Its easy to get people to do work for you when you've got homebrew on tap:) Anyway, about...

    Wine Making 101?

I have a unique oppurtunity to get my hands on some fresh California Grapes in the next few weeks so I thought I would try to make some wine for the first time. Can anyone point my in the direction of some how to resources? I want to know what sort of additional equipment I'll need outside of...

    Buying Life Insurance...

Experiences? Opinions? I'm considering buying life insurance because I'm young, healthy and have been offered very cheap rates on a large policy. I'm just curious what other people's take on this subject is. I'm currently married with no children, but would like to start a family in the...

They sell heating element wrenches in the heating element section at HD. They are only a few bucks and they fit perfectly and can be turned with your hand pretty easily. http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-100184464/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

    Non-Rims/Herms E-Build?

Yep, what walker said is dead on. that's the simplest solution you could have with an electric set up. You wouldn't even have to use a pump if you didn't want to, you could make it a gravity fed system. Heat up water in your HLT, drain it into mash tun. Sparge from your mash tun to the BK...

    Need some dry hopping advice

I usually just rack to a secondary and then add dry hops in muslin bags. It usually works well. I haven't tried the weight yet to get them to sink. Today, I'm trying a new technique. I just tossed fresh, whole hops in the primary after the primary fermentation is complete. I haven't decided...
