    Refractometer

I am seeing refractometers that range in price from $20-$100. Is there a specific set of characteristics they need to have for beer brewing or are they all the same?

    Engraving my mash paddle

My final thoughts now that I have used this paddle, I need bigger numbers. In a steam filled boiling pot, water levels were hard to read.

    Help with OG

Grain bill was 11.5 lbs, I mashed for an hr, stirring every 15 min, then ran off wort and added sparge water at about a gallon each at a time. This process took me about another hour. My pre boil target was 7.3 gallons, I couldn't have had more than 7.5 gallons when I was done (according to my...

    Help with OG

My recipe says pre boil OG should be 1.04. I get 1.011 at 135 degrees and the hydrometer is calibrated at 60. Am I ok? What do I do?

    Hopsdirect bags

How long can I keep the air tight 1# bags of hops if I don't open them? Do they still need to be refrigerated or frozen?

Anyone own a Brewershardware affordable brew pot??

I did weldless as well it was super easy with a step drill bit / reamer. That drill bit added $20 (harbor freight) to the cost which usually isn't mentioned but I am sure it will have other uses down the road. Otherwise mine works great and has yet to leak. It was also easy to remove and...

    Engraving my mash paddle

The finished product. I used my 1 gallon measuring cup/pitcher to add each gallon. Just to be safe and for complete overkill I also marked the gallons in reverse as I drained the pot. Pretty easy. Took about an hour, but I also watched basketball, drank beer and cleaned the kitchen as I...

Anyone own a Brewershardware affordable brew pot??

I did a lot of my own research before building my own just like this. My total cost came to about 160, so this seems like a deal to me. Sorry cant speak to the quality of this particular model.

    Hop Storage

How long can the silver air tight hopsdirect bags last unopened? Do I need to freeze them or do I only need to do that after I open them?

Low pressure burner high pressure regulator

What about the reverse? High pressure burner and low pressure regulator and hose.

Low pressure burner high pressure regulator

What happens if I mix and match say a 30psi regulator with a 50,000 btu low pressure burner? Would a 3x increase in psi result in a 3x btu output?

1 burner? 11 gallon AG batches

That's what I was afraid of, does it use a lot of propane?

1 burner? 11 gallon AG batches

What one burner would you (or do you) use for 11 gallon AG batches? I have a stand similar to the Bayou Classic SP50 but the burner is rusted out. Should I be looking at high pressure burners or low? I am looking at 50,000 BTUs with a low pressure regulator...

    10 gallon paint strainers?

I was considering using a 10 gallon bag in addition to my DIY mash tun with a braided hose. My first attempt at all grain made me think the braided hose offered little to no filtration. Sounds like a false bottom may be my next best option.

    10 gallon paint strainers?

    Do they exist?

Help Me, Homebrewtalk...You're My Only Hope

How big are those bags? Does that more or less line your cooler?

    Engraving my mash paddle

I would still be measuring the change in volume within the mash tun, regardless of the quantity of grain. I just can't decide if there would be much value in keeping track of that. I suppose for future brews I would be developing a better sense for the amount of fluid retained.

    Flavor addittions

At what point does one add flavors to their beer, for example I think I saw orange zest at the homebrew store? Does it depend on the ingredient at all? I am thinking mostly things that would not otherwise be added to beer.

    Engraving my mash paddle

I am all set to do this tonight, I am going to mark off my brew kettle on one side, would there be any value in marking off my mash tun volume on the other?
