    Abyss is Seattle?

That's Bottleworks - Love that store! Same people run Brouwer's Cafe in Fremont. If you haven't been there, you need to. Austin

    Black IPA Recipe help

Will do! I'm hoping to brew my version this weekend. I'm glad I'm not the only one that has actually tasted this brew! Austin

    Black IPA Recipe help

Nope, it wasn't imperial at all, but had great citrusy hop aroma plus some porter flavor (smooth, not smoky). It was pitch black with good brownish head. My best guess is that it was the Black Brutal '07, which I read on beeradvocate.com that some people have been getting served when they...

    Black IPA Recipe help

Last night I was at Brouwer's Cafe in Seattle, and had a glass of what was labeled "Rogue Black IPA." I really like this beer and went looking for some information about it this morning online and couldn't find it anywhere. I called the bar to find out more about it and they said that the keg...

    The coffee quandry

My wife is the coffee expert in our house, with a lot of barista experience from her college days. Here's the deal. The grind of the coffee is related to how long the brewing will take (i.e. how long will the coffee be "soaking" in the water). The faster the brewing, the finer the grind...

    The coffee quandry

When I brewed the Mocha Stout in my signature line, I used 1 lb of Italian roast coffee and cold brewed a total of 32 oz that I added in secondary. This was not too much coffee flavor according to any of my friends that tried it. Also of note is that for cold brewing, you should use a very...

chocolate espresso stout has a bitter bite. How to fix?

I'll second the aging suggestion for the current batch. That said, if you brew this again try using cold brewed coffee instead of espresso. It results in a much smoother, less bitter coffee. I add ~30 oz of cold brew coffee to my Mocha stout and it's not bitter at all. Austin

Please help me build a brew rig

:off: I'm originally from Kansas City and live in Seattle now... Love BBQ and do some smoking (ribs, tenderloins, chicken etc...) when I have time too. You're probably one of like 5 people that I have talked to from Seattle that doesn't think grilling is BBQing. On that note, BBQ...

    What are you drinking now?

Delridge Pale Ale... my own concoction of hoppy deliciousness. SWMBO is drinking my Scotish Ale. Austin

    Growing hops with dogs.

It may sound weird, but I caught our dogs (English and French Bulldogs) trying to steal hop buds from my hops when they were growing up my deck posts this past summer. They also tried to eat the leaves before any hops had a chance to bud. Austin

    Conical fermenter vs. bucket/carboy

Yeah, I got the first one for that price to check it out, then after using it decided that I needed to start watching for another one. I've noticed that you can sometimes find them for a lower price by searching for both "fermenters" and "fermentors." Austin

    Conical fermenter vs. bucket/carboy

+1 on the Minibrew conicals... I have a pair of them. Watch out for them on Ebay! I got each of mine for about $110 shipped (separate auctions). Austin

coffee again. do i really need a 2ndary?

I doubt that it will "fail" in your beer using this method... However, there's a link in my signature line to my Mocha Stout recipe (in the recipe database) that I made with cold-brewed coffee. At the bottom, it describes the method to cold brew your coffee. I highly recommend...

S/S Braid in Boil Kettle to stop hops? Cooling Keggle with Ice?

True, I didn't bother straining pellot hops out when I used an IC. I'm thinking along the lines of my current set up that includes a CFC that I do what I can to keep from getting filled with hops debris.

S/S Braid in Boil Kettle to stop hops? Cooling Keggle with Ice?

I'd use a hop bag for pellets... they'll likely cause some clogging issues for you with just the braid. Austin

    16th Annual Holiday Bash!

That sounds like fun! If my wife's up for some beer on her bday (and she does like good beer), maybe we can swing by. Austin

    Minibrew Conical Fermenter?

Don't know about putting a racking arm on the 15 gal Minibrew... I just went out to the garage and looked at my 6.5 gallon Minibrews, and it looks like the "shelf" area is about 1/4" around the hole to the dump valve in the bottom. It's also a smooth curve to the hole, so it should help to get...

    Minibrew Conical Fermenter?

No off flavors or plastic flavors whatsoever... don't worry about that. As for the comment about the "shelf" by the dump valve, I still get the vast majority of the yeast and trub out prior to racking through the valve. I'm not worried and have had no negative results from the very small...

    Minibrew Conical Fermenter?

I have two of the MiniBrew 6.5 gallon conicals and love them. Easy to use, easy to clean and sanitize and no more racking to secondary. I got both of mine off of ebay for about $100 each, so watch on there for people selling them. I tried really hard to get a 15 gallon one locally off...
