    Cheap GFCI protection

wilserbrewer, Doesn't look ghetto to me esp. considering what I am starting with! I like the fact that the heaters are not permanently mounted in the kettle and you can move them around to different pots. I have been searching immersion heaters and haven't seen those, are they homemade?

Yes, 1 kettle, that wasn't clear. Thanks for all the good info.

    Cheap GFCI protection

I have been trying to come up with an electric kettle without spending a fortune. Tell me what you all think of using (2) 2000 watt 120 volt water heater elements plugged into 2 GFCI protected receptacles on separate circuits. Is 4000 watts enough? 120 volt GFCI receptacles are cheap. 240 volt...

    Food grade hype?

Good info! I checked my orange home depot buckets, they have the triangle 2 designation. Maybe good for pumpkin beer.

    GFCI Protection 240V 3 Wire?

Could be, so I guess the overall point is that in older units the third wire functions as neutral and ground, in newer units, neutral and grounding are separate. Essentially because (in current grounding theory) you don't want to bond the neutral and grounding at ay point except in the service...

    Brew day checklist

OK, so bear with me, I am brewing in my head only at this point! 1) Vorlauf until clear while lautering 2) Transfer some of this to the boiling kettle (how much wort?, any water addition?) heat it up and sparge with this wort. 3) Vorlauf while sparging. 4) Boil, lid off. Is this close to what...

    Brew day checklist

So, I am still aquireing equipment but have ordered supplies for an American IPA (everybody's first batch, right?). I am trying to make a checklist to be sure I don't forget any steps. From my reading and research I am somewhat confused on the order of some steps like lautering, vorlauf...

    GFCI Protection 240V 3 Wire?

Modern dryers have 4 conductors because they need a neutral for the 120 volt components in the dryer. 240 doesn't need a neutral but should have a grounding conductor. Older dryers have two hot and a grounding conductor, everything was 240 volts. For heating elements that are 240 volt there is...

    Is Second Staging Necessary?

Good info! It is recommended by all of the supply companies I have been looking at, no doubt to sell more carboys!

    Food grade hype?

So, this is my first post. I quit brewing extract about 15 years ago because of the hassles with bottling and all the great beer coming on the market. When I started in high school there wasn't any beer worth drinking although we made do. I started out brewing with blue ribbon malt extract and...
