    Motorizing my Barley Crusher

Great idea. I pulled the back cover off the motor last night and switched the wires around so it would turn in the opposite direction; stopped by Grainger this morning before work and will pick up a 1.5" and 12" pulley, 3/8 to 1/2 adaptor bushing and a 50" 3L belt this afternoon. I...

    Motorizing my Barley Crusher

the flour made what looked like fulffy clouds in the wort as I was was chilling the first batch on Sat. The second batch we filtered through an old set of pantyhose. There was less "cloud" in the second one, but there was still more than I was use to.

    Motorizing my Barley Crusher

My first two batches through the barley crusher with drill power had too much flour come through. I figure it is a good excuse to use an old 1/3 HP/1725 rpm motor I have in the basement. So far the plan is to use a 1.5" (Pitch Dia. 1.05") and a 14" (Pitch Dia. 13.55") pulleys from...

Gas post on outside of Kegerator collar

I am in the process of building a chestfreezer/kegerator and want to put a corny keg gas post on the outside of the collar. Anyone know the thread size of the posts on the cornelius kegs? I plan to use some brass plumbing fittings to link it all up. Thanks.

    Natural gas burners pt 2

It looks like those wok burners have an adjustable air flow cap thing. That would help you eliminate the yellow flame/soot problem.

Can Bleach be Used on Stainless Steel at all?

Oxyclean is good for cleaning almost everything you brew with. I let my imersion chiller, a copper coil sit in it for about a week before I brew and it takes all of the tarnish off...same thing with the copper manifold in my mashtun. I let a solution of it sit in carboys between brewing...

Making 1st batch ever, may have killed the yeast - help?

Not really a good way to tell. Go ahead and pitch once it has cooled down and set up your airlock or blowoff tube. Go get some more yeast on the next day the brew shop is open and pitch that too. Fermentations can take a very long time to start. Just keep everything sanitary and pitch the...

    Bringing home the bacon.

I keep my wife sane, who is going to be a brain surgeon (really). Before that it was working 2 FT jobs to keep the bills paid while she was in school. Professionally, I do IT work, data warehousing and advanced TSQL scripting are my forte.

    Lacto infection in a keg

bleach will pit your stainless steel corney keg. I don't see why just taking it apart and washing everything with dish soap (scrubbing with a rag and brushing out the tubes and gas fittings) first, then an oxyclean bath and then starsan wouldn't kill what ever is in the keg. I've had...

    Barley Crusher Gap setting

I haven't used the BC yet, but thought I'd try adjusting the gap. I found my feeler guages and set it at 0.037". The BC came at the 0.039" per the instructions. Anyone else change their gap? if so what did you set it at, changes in efficency? Thanks...Robert

Barley Crusher owners - please read.

I've had a barley crusher for about a week, planning to use it for the first time in about another week. I was setting the gap at 0.037" and because of this thread put some masking tape over the corners of the bottom of the hopper.

    How clean is your mashtun?

About every 3rd or fourth time I take my manifold apart and clean it, but normally I just give it a good rinse with hot water, wash with dish soap to get the ring at the top and then fill with hot water and oxyclean. Then maybe in a day or a week, when ever I remember to, I drain/pour out the...

    Wort chiller from AC unit

I had the same idea, but didn't persue it because of a licened AC tech's advice. He suggested that lead based solder is still used in the manufacture of air conditioning units. If it was cooling a tub of water for a pre chiller then that would work, but for many reasons already...

    My homebrew stirplate

inspired by this thread, I made two with just a pentometer, fan and old blackberry power supply for each and som glad tupperware type containers. I originally was using harddrive magnets, but switched to some ceramic ones from lowes that were 7/8 x 1 7/8 x 3/8 (may be different it's been...

possible use as a fermenter for 10 gal batches?

possible use as a fermenter for 10 gal batches?

A thought about the scratches... You'd have to worry about scratches on stainess too. On stainless to get rid of the scratch you'd have to polish it out if possible, if not it would be expensive to replace. I imagine that you could polish a scratch out of plastic too. But then what would...

    Air regulators good for CO2?

Uncle sam's stimulus just got me a chest freezer and ranco temp controller which is currently keeping my IPA cool. I was planning out the gas lines to use up to 5 kegs when I got to thinking about manifolds and secondary regulators. Will a small air regulator work with Co2 instead of...

Help! Need source for copper fittings

Take the whole thing to Lowes if you have one by you. If you can find something that will fit loosely, it most likely will seal up with enough solder. I used this method on my chiller when my compression fittings wouldn't seal up.

whats the best soak for a carboy

Look for Sun Oxygen cleaner, it's the Wal-Mart brand OxyClean. I think it was 4 or 5 times less per ounce when I bought it the last time. I use it on kegs and carboys, bottles too. Pretty soon I'm going to try loosening up the labels on bottles with it.
