    Jack's Chest Freezer Fermentation Chamber

Awesome build, gclunde. I like how you built the lower floor up to the height of the hump. That's a great idea for fitting two carboys side-by-side. As for thanking me for the inspiration, I can only pass the thanks on to the many on this forum who have done similar projects before me...

    Co2 manifold. Copper?

The manifolds from MoreBeer are copper/brass. The reason I'm buying one and not making one is those you can buy include a check valve at every outlet. I could make a manifold for little money, but once I include check valves it's not much less than the commercial offerings.

Kitchen Sink Sprayer to Wort Chiller Splice

Yeah, another +1. As you can see from my setup, doing this would make things a bit easier for me. I wouldn't have to disconnect my cold water line to the sink every time.

Kitchen Sink Sprayer to Wort Chiller Splice

This depends on your faucet. The aerator on my kitchen faucet threads into the faucet neck (not onto it). That is, the faucet neck is female, the aerator is male. I could not find the correct fittings at the hardware store to allow me to attach a washing machine hose to my kitchen faucet...

How long does a 5lb co2 bottle last for kegs?

I realize I'm replying to an old post, but I'm new to kegging and am also in Pgh. Is it typical for beer distributors around here to refill CO2?

    2011 Hop Garden Picture Thread

Harvested my 2nd year Centennial & Willamette hops yesterday. Got just under an ounce (27.1g) of Cent and a measly 2.1g of Willamette after drying them on the . Centennial: Willamette: My EKG plant has not yet pushed any buds; not sure if it will. The Spalt Select plant has...

    Attention Pittsburgh Hop Growers!

If you live along a state route in a western Pgh suburb at the top of the hill up from the on-ramp to I-79, please PM me! I'm purposely trying to be vague about the exact location, but I drive past your hops on the way home each day and would love to talk to a fellow Pgh brewer & hop grower...

    2011 Hop Garden Picture Thread

Second year. From left to right: Spalt Select, EKG, Willamette, Centennial. The Spalt Selects are doing great, dozens of cones from the four bines I let grow. Maybe hundreds. The Cents are doing alright, too. Dozens of big cones. The Willamette has some cones but no lateral growth...

What to do when bines reach the top?

What do you do when your hop bines reach the top of the trellis or, in my case, twine? My garden is set up such that the bines climb on coir yarn that is tied to the top of my shed (12-14' high). This picture was taken 10 days ago. The leftmost bines in that picture (Spalt Select) have...

What's the most priming sugar you've used?

The reason I started this thread is because I recently bottled a Dubbel and primed it to 3.3 volumes. Accounting for residual CO2, I used 7 ounces by weight of table sugar in 5.25 gallons of beer, or 1 1/3 ounces per gallon. After bottling I started to wonder if the standard long neck brown...

What's the most priming sugar you've used?

Interesting. Even at 1 tsp per 500 ml, that's 1.4 ounces per gallon, unless my math is wrong. That would give you about 3.5 volumes if your beer fermented at 72F. Now if you used 1 tsp per 333ml, you'd be looking at 2.1 oz per gallon, which is about 5 volumes! What kind of bottles did you...

What's the most priming sugar you've used?

What's the most priming sugar you have ever used per gallon when bottling? If you're trying to go for style-appropriate carbonation levels, you might need to use 1.25 oz. or more of table sugar per gallon of beer to reach ~3.5 volumes. Have you ever used this much priming sugar? How did it...

Love Probe taped to carboy reads a little low

Am I correct in that temperature is measured over the entire circumference of the probe? If so, I guess it would be impossible to get an accurate measurement without submerging it. Even insulation won't totally keep it from measuring the ambient temp, because insulation merely slows the...

Love Probe taped to carboy reads a little low

I recently built a fermentation chamber from a chest freezer. I posted about it here. I have my first beer fermenting in it now. I'm finding that the temperature reading on the Love TSS2-2100 might not be quite right. For instance, the controller is reading 65.8F, but the stick-on LCD...

pigtailing 12 gauge solid wire.... ARGGGGGGGGGGGH

Electrical tape is not meant for insulation. It is meant to secure the wire nut to the already-insulated wires. If you're not using wire nuts and are soldering wires together, you should be using heat-shrink insulation over the soldered joint. Electrical tape breaks down over time and is...

    Yet another fermentation chamber.

Nice! I thought about building something like this but couldn't find a free dorm fridge and figured if I was paying, I might as well go the lazy route and use a chest freezer.

    Jack's Chest Freezer Fermentation Chamber

Ed: That's a good point about the light bulb. That would work, too. I considered feeding an E26 light fixture with the second output of the Love controller, but decided against it because I didn't like the idea of shining light on the carboys. I know, I know - incandescent light isn't known...

    Jack's Chest Freezer Fermentation Chamber

None taken. Woodworking is another hobby of mine, so I had the scrap pine and the ability to whip up the collar in a half-hour or so. You were right - my keezer build ought to be nice when I get around to it. :D

    Jack's Chest Freezer Fermentation Chamber

Thanks, Mike. Overkill? Maybe. I looked at all my options - freezer, fridge, dorm fridge, insulated box with a dorm fridge in it, son of fermentation chiller. In the end I felt a keezer worked best for me. I can always convert it to an actual keezer for kegs later if I choose. In addition...
