What to do when mash is not passing iodine test?

I had this as a second post in my floating thermometer thread, but maybe this is entitled to a separate thread. Long story short my shiny new floating therm gave incorrect readings, and I think I mashed at 130-140F, instead of 150F; my iodine tests are very poor right now with complete...

new to the board and new to brewing

Well welcome! Nice gag gift if I must say; whatever gets you into the hobby :mug:

    Is my yeast dead?

I could be wrong, but I think even with poor yeast, if there are any alive, they'll propagate to fill the correct volume of wort. Did you get Krausen? I'd say if you saw active fermentation then it should be ok, but may just need to sit a lot longer. What were your ambient temps at fermentation...

    Experience with Floating Thermometer

My iodine test, after the longer sparge, is still quite purple/black; what can I do to rectify this... mash longer? I am heating the mash/sparge now to boil, but I can stop if I should try to mash longer.

    Experience with Floating Thermometer

Yea... interesting topic in the scope of things :fro: I was so excited for brewing this weekend with my new floating thermometer... third brew and learning as I go! I have been doing partial-mash extracts and didn't realize at my first brew a month ago that the 12 inch thermometer wouldn't...

Bottling for First Time Right Now; Quick Question

Thanks! Bottling was a fun experience and was actually very easy as I set up my system similar to the awesome bottling tips post where the wand is attached to the spigot directly with a little tubing inbetween. It was my first time using the autosiphon, so starting the siphon proved a little...

Bottling for First Time Right Now; Quick Question

Well yea; WDWHAHB :D What I'm curious on is not the middle ground, but is it better to leave X amount above the trub or is it better to get all the wort and a little bit of trub/yeast?

Bottling for First Time Right Now; Quick Question

First brew; bottling now. Kept in primary for 3 weeks (avoided secondary due to great advice on this forum). It's an Oatmeal Stout. Question; since this is the first time I'm racking, should I stop before the trub starts getting siphoned? This is what I did... about a quarter inch of...

    Logo help wanted

Kinda sorta :) Can you make a very rough sketch of your idea, scan it in and post it; that may help a bit (doesn't need to be pretty).

    Logo help wanted

Hmm, tricky one as keys is a tough theme. Quick concept: one could change anything around. Maybe put the Unlock Great Beer on the key chain and the Keys Brewing Co. larger and elsewhere on the label. Could also add a background that fits your location of brewing.

Brewing - Already Boiled Wort; Accident - Quick Advice

Certainly seems the way to do it... it took me near 30 minutes to get to 80F with the immersion chiller.

Brewing - Already Boiled Wort; Accident - Quick Advice

I took an OG reading just before adding the extra gallon of water to the carboy (stupid me for not taking it then); I got a reading of 1.064 versus the expect 1.048 - 1.052. I'm guessing adding this extra water would lower that, but what would contribute to a higher OG than expected and what are...

Brewing - Already Boiled Wort; Accident - Quick Advice

Interesting... that could work as it's high enough to the inlet that it would likely work; never knew such a thing existed to join copper to copper. Thanks!

Brewing - Already Boiled Wort; Accident - Quick Advice

Very impressed with the icebath... 60F in 25min; definitely don't need even 5 bags of ice. Realized I was an inch or two below the 5 gal mark on the carboy so I am boiling 1.5 gallons now and will throw that into the ice bath to chill fast and add to primary. I had the the hop bag in a strainer...

Brewing - Already Boiled Wort; Accident - Quick Advice

I'm really impressed with this ice bath though... down to 80F already in 15 min... would do it more often if it did't cost $20 for 5 bags... wonder if I can take the other 5 bags back.

Brewing - Already Boiled Wort; Accident - Quick Advice

What happened is that during the last brew, my first, I scrunched down and bent the immersion coils so that they would completely be in the brew; otherwise half were sticking out and not cooling enough. This obviously induced a crack that presented itself in this batch. I have the coils with the...

Brewing - Already Boiled Wort; Accident - Quick Advice

Thanks for the responses guys. I had to act fast so I brought back up to a boil for 15 min to sterilize while my wife got ice. She got 10 large bags so the wort is in the bath now with a mixture of cold water and ice. My first ice bath brew so I'm not 100% sure of the process but I have 5 bags...

Brewing - Already Boiled Wort; Accident - Quick Advice

Will explain later. Brewing went very well; during wort chill, after a few minutes, I noticed a crack in the wort immersion chiller and water leaking into wort. Shut off water. Wife now running to store to get ice to chill wort. Should I bring wort back up to boil due to garden hose water...
