    is this ok?

I do this everytime I brew. You'll be fine. If it still bothers you, alter your technique next time and sterilize the jug. I'd be very surprised if you have any problems. In about 4 weeks you'll be drinking your own beer. Enjoy!

How long does your bottling take?

Number one reason, in my opinion, for me switching over to kegs. I know not everyone can accomodate such means, but if you can, and have been thinking about it...just do it. You can believe how much better it is.

    Steeping specialty grains

I have always squeezed the grain bag to get the extra moisture out. I think as long as you don't crest 170F threshold, you will not get off flavors from your steeping grain. Above that and you risk extracting tannins. Squeeze away, I say. :D

    Steeping specialty grains

I've seem mixed reviews on this too, but I figure if there is a chance it will make my beer better...than why not. It isn't any more difficult to do it this way, just a different method.

    Steeping specialty grains

Gents, that is what I did. I just finished brewing a batch tonight, steeped for 30 minutes at 160F in 3qts, then added another 2 gal of water for the boil. Got it up to 212F, added 2lbs of DME and hops....boiled for 45 minutes and then added the 4lbs of LME and let it steep (with the heat off)...

    Irish Moss

I have never noticed Irish moss doing anything weird to my brew. Works as intended as far as I can tell. I've not used whirlfloc, but on my next batch I have a tablet that came with the kit and I'll have to let you know how that turns out.

You CAN make good extract only beer

I wish I had a way to tell if the LME I have been using is fresh or not. I've made kits from Midwest up to this point, I don't recal them printing a date produced on the jug they deliver the LME in. I just got a kit from Morebeer and I don't think they do that either. I have not brewed with...

You CAN make good extract only beer

I wonder if that is the same problem I've been having. I am completely anal about everything in my process (cleaning, sanitizing, boiling procedures, temp control, etc) but my batches (extract brewing too) all have a twangy taste to them. It doesn't kill the beer, but it is there and takes...

    Irish Moss

I use and Irish Moss and geletin powder. Seems to help clarify more than not using them.

    Steeping specialty grains

I'm learning more and more that your statement is very accurrate. Anymore, when I brew, I don't even look at the directions. I am curious about doing partial mashes. I need to read up on that and figure out how to get the ingredients to try a batch that way.

    Steeping specialty grains

Thanks for the info, guys. I typically steep in around 2-3 gallons of water for 30 minutes and use that time to prep and sanitize other items; only coming around to the brew pot to play with the grain bag every few minutes. (I do tie the bag to a handle and do not allow it to rest on the...

    Steeping specialty grains

It was a typo, thanks; I'll go back and change it. Any thoughts on the 1lb/3qt question?

    Steeping specialty grains

In my pursuit of improving my brews, I ran across this table and discovered something that I have not read before. Troubleshooting Chart - Brew Your Own (BYO), the How-To Homebrew Beer Magazine Looking at the 3rd problem listed (puckering, tea-like quality; astringency) in the left hand...
