New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Looks great. What was your grain bill for that?

Used Keg (cleaning) vs New Keg

I buy new AEB kegs now for 2 reasons: 1) The last used keg I bought looked like a tank ran over it in WW2. And the website said "gently used" or "almost new" or something. Last time I bought a used one. 2) All my replacement parts are identical. I don't have to worry about which lids fit...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

Anyone have experience with their conical heater and neoprene jacket in cold temps? Wondering what kind of temp I can expect in a 50F garage with the jacket and heater wrap. Would that be enough to get me to say 72F with nothing else? Any idea on the differential I can expect without a ferm...

    Questions for Monster Mill owners

@IslandLizard Your setup is kinda what I was thinking. Get the drill set up so I can turn it on and then just dump in the grain. I don't want to have to hold the drill trigger as I feed the hopper. I only have a 3/8" cordless so I will be buying a new drill for this regardless. Monster says...

    Questions for Monster Mill owners

My local HBS is closing so I decided on a 3 roller monster mill. It will be in my attached garage so it shouldn't be exposed to the elements. My questions: Is it worth paying more for the 1/2" drive shaft? Is it worth upgrading to the better SS rollers? Is it worth upgrading to the SS hopper?

Kettles without Tri-clad for bottom drains?

My basket has legs to keep it off the element in a flat bottom kettle. If the bottom of the kettle is sloped in a conical shape, the basket could get off kilter and end up resting on the element.

Kettles without Tri-clad for bottom drains?

Do you know what the typical bottom slope is on these types of kettles? Will a basket with legs be stable?

Kettles without Tri-clad for bottom drains?

Would you pull from the bottom for recirculating and whirlpooling? Or would that possibly cause cavitation under the basket? If you didn't pull from the bottom during recirculation and whirlpooling, you'd have some wort at the bottom that might not be getting mixed well. How would you keep the...

Kettles without Tri-clad for bottom drains?

Anyone ever use a bottom draining kettle for eBIAB? I'm on the hunt for a new kettle that has all the features I want and just wondering if a kettle with a bottom drain makes sense/is practical for eBIAB.

Is there any noticeable increase in gravity from adding fruit post-fermentation?

I am expecting about 4.5 gallons into the secondary and wanted to add strawberries. It's using the Joe's Quick Grape Mead recipe mostly, so it will already have some grape flavor to it. I want to add some extra fruit complexity with the strawberries and was curious if I should backsweeten the...

Is there any noticeable increase in gravity from adding fruit post-fermentation?

The mead will probably finish around 1.00. I'm curious how much of the sugar will actually migrate from the fruit into the mead and how much will remain trapped in the fruit. Is there a rule of thumb like "1 pound of fruit in 1 gallon of water will add XX points to the solution"?

Is there any noticeable increase in gravity from adding fruit post-fermentation?

I'm planning on making a mead and after fermentation ends, I am going to add some fruit and let it sit for a little bit. Should I expect any noticeable increase in gravity, or will I just get flavor? I'm going to add campden and potassium sorbate after fermentation so I shouldn't pick up any...

    15A receptacle on a 20A breaker?

I opened the panel and the breaker has 12AWG (yellow wrap) going to it. But it is the breaker for more than one receptacle so I don't know what happens when the wiring splits in the walls and floor to run to each receptacle. I'll have check out the wiring on the receptacles themselves to see...

    15A receptacle on a 20A breaker?

I'm the original owner and I had the house built in 2012. If I pull out the receptacle, would the gauge be on the wire?

    15A receptacle on a 20A breaker?

Looking to maybe move my eBIAB setup inside for the winter, but I have some questions about my outlets. I have 15A outlets in my kitchen but the breakers on these outlets are 20A. So here are my questions: Is it possible the wiring in the walls is for 15A even though the breaker is 20A? Or...

    Non-proportional effects of scaling recipes

Hop utilization does not scale linearly. You get more bang for your buck per ounce as you scale up. Conversely, you lose when you scale down.

    Joe's Quick Grape Mead

How many gallons? If you do the 1 gallon recipe from the original post, you should be over 1.10 for sure. Maybe you didn't mix well before taking the reading?

Anyone know if there's a John Guest elbow fitting for a beer shank?

@whovous I have a T tower so no clearance issues for me. In the standard 2 faucet tower, I could see that being an issue. Have you tried shorter shanks?

Anyone know if there's a John Guest elbow fitting for a beer shank?

Yep. That's what I ended up with. Worked for what I needed.

    Wanting to switch to electric

I'm used to using a 15 gallon kettle for my batches. I went with 15 because I didn't want to have to ever worry about boilovers from hops or being constrained on the size of my grain bill if I wanted a high ABV beer. I'm sure I could make 10.5 gallons work but I like being able to walk away...
