    Allagash Tour : Portland, ME

Not a Maine native, but lived in Portland for a few years and it is a great Beer town. I'm surprised no one has mentioned Maine Beer Company. They were brand new when I moved away from Portland but I know they are located almost across the street from Allagash and now they do tours. Geary's is...

    First wort or mash hop

The latest episode of BeerSmith Podcast is a round table of Denny Conn, Gordon Strong, and John Palmer, and this is one of the topics they cover. It is a good watch/listen. If you don't feel like it listening to it, basically they saw no reason to do Mash hopping and felt like FWH is like...

What extract kit beer to you keep around the most?

Midwest Hop Head DIPA. Was one of the first ones I made, and keep going back for it.

    Shed Mountain Ale Clone

This thread is interesting. I'm a fan of this beer (although didn't like most of the other beers from The Shed). Thought I should point out that The Shed closed a few weeks ago. It was just announced however, that Otter Creek, a brewery in Middlebury, VT is taking over The Shed's equipment...

    ESB's

I mostly go with NB, but recently finished off my last bottle of a batch of Classic ESB from Midwest, and I really enjoyed it. It is on the lighter side of an ESB.

    Keeping track of each brew

I use a log book that BasicBrewing puts out every year that is very nice. Although I do use BeerSmith to keep track of recipes and stuff, I like the physical log book where I can write stuff and keep track of dates. In the book there is a spot to write down batch number. So that batch number...

What does your LHBS do to keep you coming back?

I, like a few others in this thread, greatly dislike my LHBS. I basically only go there for things that are heavy or other equipment I need asap. On the surface it seems like a good shop but then we you start talking to the owners, you realize that they have no business in sales. An interesting...

    Best Extract Kit?

+1. The dry hopping was an extra step that I wasn't use to, but I brewed this as my 2nd or 3rd batch so I was still new to the whole thing. By far the best kit I've brewed in the 15+ kits I've used so far. I brewed AHS's IPA and a DIPA recipe my LHBS had, both turned out very meh in comparison...

    AHS Apocalypso Opinions

Just brewed this a few days ago. I did the mini-mash and over shot the OG a bit, 1.058. It is interesting to see so many using Notty. I myself, used the Wyeast Greenbelt, the AHS exclusive yeast

Confusion about bottle carbing and temps

Wow, this calculator is great! Although makes me wonder if I've been over carbing all my beers. Does anyone know of an easy way to convert corn sugar from oz to tsp/tbsp/cups? Based on what I've read 4oz = 3/4 cup for Corn sugar. I assume Corn sugar and Cane sugar weight the same, so maybe...

Confusion about bottle carbing and temps

Thanks for the responses. TL;DR: Most kits provide 5oz~ of priming sugar. Is that for 5G of beer measured at bottling or 5G put into primary (IE: not actually 5G at bottling since some is lost with transfer) I thought I'd update this thread... So I have this Saison I brewed like 2 months...

Confusion about bottle carbing and temps

Here is my situation: I store most of my beer in my basement. Right now it is in the upper 60s (66 right now) and will dip down into the lower 40s and upper 50s during winter, but can get as high as 72~ during the hottest part of the summer. I have some mostly commercial beers but planning on...

Transfer to Secondary with Light Kreuzen

+1 leave it in the Primary, from my (small) amount of experience, longer primaries are always better. You may even want to just skip the secondary altogether

Whats your Favorite Midwest beer kit?

Their Hop Head DIPA turned out soooo good. The best DIPA kit I've made. Their Maple Dark Ale also turned out well (I added more syrup than it called for).

    Hockey, unpopular among fellow homebrewers?

I'm a couple years older, but I get what you mean. Growing up Dale Hunter was my guy, had posters, jerseys, the whole 9 yards. But I always heard about the glory years in the early 80s. They sucked in the 80s and no one wanted to admit it. They sucked in the early 90s too. I honestly think some...

    Hockey, unpopular among fellow homebrewers?

This thread seems to have more posts about Caps than any other team... I'm perfectly fine with that. I never said anything about how good or bad Green and Semin are. They are both great players, and Semin (imho) is better than Ovie on pure skill. On paper the Caps are the most skilled team...

    Hockey, unpopular among fellow homebrewers?

Caps fans should remember Brian Pothier, who was run into the boards in what looked like a very normal hit. He seemed fine until he got into the locker room and had no idea where he was. Partially lost sight in both eyes, and felt the effects 2 yrs~ later. Thankfully he was able to come back...

    What's your favorite Micro brewery.

I just can't pick 2. Hill Farmstead and The Alchemist. Hill Farmstead can now be found in some select bars in Philly and NYC. If you ever get a chance to come to Vermont, you have to check these 2 places out. For those not local or that don't know, Alchemist starting labor day weekend will...

    Hockey, unpopular among fellow homebrewers?

Yea, the bandwagoners @ caps games are pretty saddening. It is usually pretty easy to tell the difference, but at least the team is getting more publicity. I'll agree Green may need to go and probably Semin too, but not Schultz. Erskine should go before Schultz, although Erskine stepped up his...
