How do you guys calculate extraction efficiency?

Use Beersmith and plug in the actual gravity of the grain or extracts you use in the recipe. It does all the math for you.

    1st & 2nd AG...

After 2 weeks that beer should be fermented and conditioned a bit and you can keg. I usually let the keg(s) sit at 70F to let the Starsan residual be eaten up by the yeast for 7 to 10 days and to condition and then crash chill while CO2 is applied to carbonate. From Boil to serving should be...

    Secondary fermentation

I have determined that ales do not require a secondary because they are not in primary fermentation that long and I have never had any off flavors from leaving it in the primary fermenter. I have fermented high gravity ales up to 5 weeks without any problems. Edit: I think a lot of people...

    1st & 2nd AG...

#1)You should let it sit at 70F for a week before crashing. #2 I don't understand what you are asking? #3 Use Beersmith for your calculations (it's cheap to buy and does anything you need). Nottingham attenuates very well and you pitched plenty so I don't think that was anything to do with...

Easy Partial Mash Brewing (with pics)

Maybe it was an accident and maybe not but I think that "Yooperbrewer" should pick another name and let YooperBrew have her unique idenity.

    Secondary fermentation

Leave it alone for 2 to 3 weeks in the primary. Then bottle or keg. No secondary needed.

    PM versus All grain

If you want to try all grain just do it. I have always been one to get on with it, damn them torpedo's - full steam ahead. All you need is a large enough cooler/mash-tun with a stainless braid and a big enough boiler and a burner to heat it. The rest of the stuff you already have if you brew...

    weak stir plate

I said the following in this thread "I found that a 1 inch stir bar works best because it is about the same length as a computer hard drive magnet. For larger stir bars you need a longer magnet the same length to work well. tip: I try to mock up the fan and the flask with a plastic sheet over...

    Mashing out at 212°....

It does seem odd to make the whole mash 212F because of tannins but all you can do is test your information on a small batch to confirm what happens.

    Using corn in mash?

If you later like corn in your mash and don't mind saving money and taking the time to cereal mash then read here. If you search on the web "Cereal mash" you will find other articles on making a cereal mash.

Vorlauf takes a while to run clear

I have used a false bottom and braid and still have both and when I want to use the false bottom it is usually when I am trying not to have a stuck sparge when making a large grain bill and especially when using a lot of wheat. I do not have to use rice hulls and have not got a stuck mash yet...

Krausen, to remove or not. And, how?

Leave it alone for 10 days to 2 weeks. You can then take a gravity reading just before bottling or keging if you like. There is no need to mess with it otherwise. There is no need for secondary fermenters either. Always be sanitary when handling beer and use a sanitizer on anything that...

    Efficiency

Well, time will tell then. I crush all my grains and as long as I sparge correctly I get better than 80% eff. It is not hard to do this if your crush has the grain husks well open but not powdered.

You might as well go for the liquid and keep it 67F if you can.

    Aluminium keggle conversion question

You can not use this keg for boiling. You need to find an all stainless keg. The material in the keg you have is plastic and will melt if heated.

    weak stir plate

Some fans have the magnetic material too close to the face of the fan and the computer magnet's magnetic flux is killed or canceled by the computer magnet which is much stronger. You can try another fan or make a spacer from wood about 1 inch away from the face of the fan and glue the magnet to...

    Yeast Nutrient

A nutrient is especially good when the yeast quantity or quality is a bit low or the gravity is high. The yeast need all the help they can get when they have a big job to do.

    Want to brew tomorrow but...

If it is an ale then the dried yeast would work fine if it is the correct type for the style. A liquid yeast is a more pure strain and can make a difference but then it is up to your desires. Without knowing exactly what you are brewing it is hard to say any more.

    Efficiency

I totally missed answering your main question because I was trying to up your efficiency so you don't need to cheat. :)
