Can you Brew It recipe for Firestone Walker Union Jack

Did anyone listen to the show this week? I guess they tried to clone it again and had Mitch on the show again. It's not up on iTunes yet so I haven't heard it.

    Open fermentation

I'm doing it right now. If you listen to the brewing network shows, a lot of brewers who do open fermentation still cover the fermenter, they just aren't using an airlock. I have my fermenter covered with aluminum foil. When that yeast is going nothin is going to fall in that fermenter.

    check it or leave it?

While I would agree that a higher og beer would take longer than three days, a 1030 beer should be done after 3 if the temps are good. The yeast should still be active and absorbing metabolic byproducts.

    check it or leave it?

Leave it. Check it when you think it is ready to bottle.

    Dry hopping: Primary vs. secondary

Is that the primary? If so that's fine. Also if you transferred onto those hops sometimes the thick hops sludge sticks to the top before it spreads out and drops through the beer. Rdwhahb

Show off your 2012 Hops garden!

Updated pic of hops at the inlaws. Biggest plant is a second year cascade which gave me a pound of hops the first year. Centennial plant showing some leaf decay. Close up of a damaged leaf. Anyone have any ideas? We have had a lot of rain lately. I haven't fertilized them but there is a...

Let's play identify the nutrient deficiency!

There is a reason golf courses water the grass on hot days--it cools the plant down. If the reverse was true all the fairways and greens would die!

Let's play identify the nutrient deficiency!

I never water mine and just let nature handle it. I have mulch down so the soil stays nice and moist all the time.

Mash Tun with stainless steel braided weave hose

The only time I have had an issue with my braid was when I brewed with a pump for the first time. I recirculated waaaay too fast and it crimped the braid. Since then I haven't had any issues. We get 84% eff with a hwh supply hose about 2" diameter and runs just straight across the mash tun...

Let's play identify the nutrient deficiency!

Too much water? We've had a lot here in new England over the last month and some of my second years look like that.

Time for big boy software... So many choices!

Fwiw I used beer alchemy for years then switched to beer smith when it came out in Mac. Beer smith I more powerful on the computer but doesn't have the iOS capability yet. It almost has too many options to customize haha but it really is a powerful brewing tool.

Show off your 2012 Hops garden!

Here Are my second year cascade and centennials I planted at the inlaws. This was two weeks ago. They are over the top of that 12 foot post now. Here are my first year Columbus, chinook, cent, and cascade. The pic was taken in April when I planted. The Columbus and chinook are doing well for...

    Hopburst-ish APA Recipe Idea

How long do you whirlpool? If you cool in slow you may get some bitterness from the last cascade addition. I would definitely not use an English yeast if you are looking to really showcase the hops. Personally I don't like any crystal in my pale ales as I usually get too much sweetness.

Maximum grain capacity for 10 gallon igloo cooler

Yeah I tried 33 lbs one time not thinking that doubling the recipe would provide too much grain. Ended up with 30 pound in there but flooded the mash tun once. Beer ended up fantastic.

    Horrible Efficiency - Why?

I too had poor efficiency with ahb crushed grain. My problem was equipment related though. What are you using for a mash tun?

    PVC Tower Cooling Solution

One thing I have learned is that you want your beer line running "uphill" all the way to the faucet. If not, any air that is trapped in there or co2 out of solution will foam when it gets to the faucet. If everything is uphill that co2 will all be at the faucet from the get go and there won't be...

Can you Brew It recipe for Firestone Walker Union Jack

Iirc I used 002 and ended up with a fg around 1016 with a single rest at 148. I think I will use 007 next time. The recipe is fantastic no matter what you do.

Question for first time kegging and fermentation!!

That is what I do now. You can also crash in the keg but you will end up with some extra sediment that way.

Woodstock inn brewery here in nh makes a really good maple porter IMO. You may want to contact them.

Question for first time kegging and fermentation!!

FYI it will suck any liquid into the carbon through the airlock or blow off. Not a big deal but I sucked in about a pint of starsan once. Good thing it didn't affect the beer!
