    Hoppy Flavour and Aroma

There are several sizes out there but by far the most common is the 5gal / 19L, at least in North America... not sure about the UK. Going with 5gal enables you to take advantage of the vast market for used kegs, which cost a fraction of new ones.

    Force Carbing 11 Gallons

I was thinking about this too. Reasoning through it, CO2 can only "enter" the beer at the CO2/beer interface. The size of this interface is dictated by the inner diameter of the keg at that point. I'm guessing that the rate of carbonation for a given volume of beer at a given headspace...

    Force Carbing 11 Gallons

Yeah, a bit of patience would go a long way here. But I know that it's nigh on impossible to dissuade new brewers from succumbing to their impatience. :) If you really must drink the beer at day 15, I'd keg the beer now and get it in the fridge. Centennial Blonde does not need 2 weeks to...

    Hoppy Flavour and Aroma

In theory, no. In practical/realistic terms, yes. Somebody has to say it, sorry. Back when I was bottling, I tried several all-grain hoppy beers and they were, if I'm being brutally honest, woefully disappointing. Eventually I'd had it. There's an old adage that says, to paraphrase...

    Bottling Part of a Batch

I wouldn't do it, myself. Even if there is CO2 in the fermentor headspace to start, every bottle you fill will draw in more air which will just sit there attacking your beer while you wait for more bottles.

How do you travel with your homebrew?

If the plan is to just transport multiple pints across town for consumption in an evening, growlers are fine. Just put them in the fridge and let people help themselves. Carbonation might go down a little bit but in my experience it is not problematic at all. If you're not sure how long the...

    Multibrew brew days

Man, back in my bottling days I used to think I was a rockstar if I could mix up bottling a batch with brewing another without screwing anything up. But 3 batches - from 3 separate mashes -is utter lunacy! I offer no suggestions or tips, haha.

    Uninspiring IPAs

Using non-purged kegs and having everything just out in the open air while you transfer from carboy to keg is something you really should look at if you want to make the best IPA possible. Anecdotally, I started seeing amazing improvements on hoppy beers once I started purging kegs and doing...

    Uninspiring IPAs

^^ yes I agree that the main issue here affecting hop aroma is cold side oxygen exposure, but when trying to troubleshoot and improve any beer for any reason, it seems crazy to me to embark on such an exercise without doing everything you can to strictly control your water. I mean, low hanging...

Best advice/method/product for moving from good to great beer

It's only as big a rabbit hole as one wants it to be. Not every mechanic at the local garage necessarily has intimate familiarity with combustion stoichiometry, but they can probably still pull your engine out and repair it. My point being, for most purposes, I think it's enough to spend...

Quick way to clean beer lines without CO2/Hand Pump/Recirc Pump?

I use the same type of tubing to slide onto my taps. It works, but I find if you're using anything warmer than lukewarm water/cleaner, then the tubing gets really soft and pliable and wants to just slip right off the tap. Clamps don't really help because the taps are tapered. This isn't...

Quick way to clean beer lines without CO2/Hand Pump/Recirc Pump?

I was going to say the same thing. It kind of depends on what the setup looks like and how accessible things are, etc. but one simple idea that springs immediately to mind: Take a bucket with a spigot on it (e.g., a bottling bucket) and fill it with cleaner. Lift it a few feet off the ground...

Best advice/method/product for moving from good to great beer

When it comes to water, I reckon there are 3 broad categories of home brewers: 1) novices who are too busy learning other fundamentals to be worrying about water. They may even be completely oblivious to the subject. 2) those who have had some really good results with certain recipes using...

    Fermentation chamber heating?

I've been using my Kreg jig for a few years, too. I've also used it for both "real" cabinets and quickie utilitarian stuff. Amazingly useful. BTW - interesting data plots. Will you be providing a summary of your results? I'm very interested in this.

    3 Day IPA

Great story. Only a homebrewer who knows what they're doing would have any hope at all of pulling off such a stunt.

    Fermentation chamber heating?

Very slick, nice work. I see you're using a pocket hole jig for easy and strong joinery. Great choice, I use mine for almost everything. Everybody should have one; it makes little hobby projects so straightforward and headache-free.

    The untold mystery about sanitization....

My goodness, no, do not try to skip sanitization in your process. Starsan is an amazing product that makes things so easy. It's almost like a magic potion. I'm not sure I would bother with this hobby without the convenience that Starsan provides.

    Fermentation chamber heating?

I would be terrified of putting a space heater inside a fridge or freezer. Previously I had been using a 60W incandescent light bulb placed in a metal bucket, which worked just fine. I just started using a 50W ceramic reptile heater thingy. I "suspend" it in mid-air inside the fridge using...

So i stopped taking gravity measurements

I still take OG readings just to make sure I haven't had any weird efficiency problems, although even this is starting to seem frivolous because 99% of the time I end up with an OG that is within 1 point of the Beersmith prediction. If I'm using familiar yeast and a repeat recipe, there is no...
