I brewed a Double IPA with an OG of 1.087 and after 1.5 weeks in primary it was down to the intended FG of 1.016. Done with dry Nottingham yeast.

Yes, it's the foam that forms during fermentation. You could certainly open up the lid to take a quick peek. Just don't do it every day.
