    Smells like sewage

If it smells like rotten eggs, it's hydrogen sulfide. Give it some more time, see how it goes.
  2. Cyclometh

    New to this.

Relax, don't worry and have a homebrew. ;) Don't be afraid to ask for advice or pointers, and do it sooner than later. Oh, and sanitize all the things. (seriously, relax- it's a lot of fun and really easy; don't get stressed about anything when doing it)

    I love this hobby already

Oh, and I bought another carboy tonight... getting that pipeline ready!

    I love this hobby already

So I've got my first two beers in the fermenters. First was an IPA, stock recipe, nothing special- started it on 10/30. Second is a pumpkin ale that I started on 11/2because the kids' jack o' lanterns were available and no longer needed after Halloween. I took SG readings on both tonight...

    Krauesen in airlock

Well, I took my lunch hour and went to get a 1" tube for a blowoff from my LHBS. I also got some small toggle bolts and sanitized them, then used them to yank the cork which was too far into the neck of the carboy. One of them broke (!) pulling it out - they're rated for about 300 pounds, so...

    Krauesen in airlock

Well, as I said I'll be getting one at lunchtime and I can rig it up in short order. I appreciate the responses and information. Again, if I'm coming across badly I apologize- sincerely! From my perspective, the conversation has kind of gone like this: Me: Hey, I'm getting some foam in my...

    Krauesen in airlock

I asked because I wanted an answer to the question, but I'm not going to get overly worked up over it. I'm just being proactive; The situation is under control at the moment, there's no immediate risk of anything going horribly wrong and I have some good ideas on what to do to mitigate the...

    Krauesen in airlock

Actually, since I have a 3-piece airlock it seems I can do a blowoff tube with some 3/8" tubing and just put it over the mouth of the outlet in the cup of the airlock. Then when things have settled down a bit I can put the cap back in place with a bit of water and call it good.

    Krauesen in airlock

Heh, that sounds like fun. :cross: I have to run some errands at lunch, I'll go by the LHBS and pick up the parts for a blowoff tube. In a way I almost hope pressure does build up; the cork is too far into the neck of the carboy to get it back out by hand and I was going to have to figure...

    Krauesen in airlock

Eh, I slung the whole thing into an eight-gallon pot and put the pot on a tile floor. It'd have to drain out over half its liquid volume to really cause a problem I couldn't take care of with 5 minutes, some sanitizer and a few paper towels. I'm not concerned about the mess so much as I am...

    Krauesen in airlock

Relax. If it needs a blowoff tube I'll get one, but let's not get into a panic or anything. ;) It's not foaming out at some epic rate; it's just colored the airlock water and produced some froth on the top of the airlock. My wife is keeping an eye on it during the day. I just wanted to...

    Carboy vs Bucket Fermentation

+1 on the Brewhauler. I love that damn thing and for a little over $10, it was worth it.

    Krauesen in airlock

And wow, it's going to TOWN in there. I moved my carboy into an eight-gallon pot and then moved the pot into my bathroom downstairs. The airlock has not clogged or anything; it's still bubbling away but the krauesen head is definitely taking up all the headroom. And this is a 6.5 gallon carboy...

    New Brewer's Pumpkin Ale

My goodness. I got home and the wort is going to TOWN in the carboy. There's about 1.5 inches of krauesen on the top, the lock is bubbling along pretty good, and the wort is swirling at an amazing rate. You can see lots of sediment that made it past the screen swirling around through the...

    New Brewer's Pumpkin Ale

OK, I boiled it up yesterday and set it to ferment in the carboy. I based the recipe off of a LHBS Scotch Ale; I'll post the specific recipe later when I have it to hand. I did the basic steep+extract method and a full boil using the grains provided: 5 gallons water in the main pot. 2 or...

    Carboy vs Bucket Fermentation

I have two batches going (my first two, in fact), one in a carboy, one in a bucket. They both seem happy enough. I like the carboy because I can watch what's going on. :)

Two Issues: Stuck cork and OG reading

I'm going to assume because I did a full boil with a grain steep and 7 lbs of LME + 1 pound of DME that the OG was pretty close to the recipe spec and that my reading was due to getting the tailings from the wort pot and not a good clean sample of the wort in the carboy. As to the cork...

Two Issues: Stuck cork and OG reading

It was a full boil but ended pretty close to 5 gallons. I think maybe it was because I took the sample fromthe pot after transferring to the carboy and there really was very little left, most of which got squeezed out of the bits of pumpkin on the bottom of the pot. We'll see how it turns out!

Two Issues: Stuck cork and OG reading

Hi folks, I just put a pumpkin ale into the carboy, and I have two minor questions. The first is that while I was putting the fermentation lock in, the rubber cork slipped too far into the mouth of the carboy. I can't get it back out. I've got the lock in and I'm just going to leave it while...

    I broked my thermometer. :(

I bought a new thermometer tonight so I could do a boil. I got out of the car and sure enough, it slipped out of the tube and shattered on the driveway. Another eight bucks down the drain, went and got my third one. So now I've had 3 thermometers and two batches of beer, neither of...
