Pulling the trigger on a kit!

I would also go with any local shop close by. It may be a little more but you would be supporting small and local business . Besides, it could not hurt to build a rapport with a local shop for custom orders, energancy help and just general knowledge,

    Warming blanket for temp control?

I have a dedicated closet in my house that I use for fermenting. Right now with the house temp about 62, I have an electric heater (one of the oil filled radiator types) that I keep plugged in and that closet stays around 70 - 75 right now.

    Antique capper issues

Mine doe snot have a washer in it. I got it from a guy who got it from a yard sale. I cleaned it up and oiled it down with some WD40. Sometime a cap will stick a bit but if I move it side to side it comes out nicely. I will try a rubber washer though.

Cleaning...at the end of my rope

Not sure if it would help but if the scale is on the inside of a bottle, try filling it about 1/4 with some hot water and adding some dry (uncooked) rice. Then swirl it around and it may remove the scale through friction/scrubbing type of action.

    LHBS Fairfield, CT??

I have never been to that Beer & Wine. I have also never had any problems at Brew & Wine. The two guys that are there are friendly and know what they are talking about (as far as I know). They have always helped when I called with questions. And it is never a quick "in and out" for us. We may go...

    LHBS Fairfield, CT??

Not sure about the Fairfield area. If you get up around Hartford, there is one in East Hartford. It is the one we go to. Nice small place but the guys who own it are super friendly and knowledgeable. Brew & Wine Hobby http://brew-wine.com/ According to the Sept BYO magazine, there is one in...

Direct me to a good newbie kit for husband?

Not sure where in NY your at but, if there is a brewery close to you, see if they do tours. If your planning on surprising him, arrange a tour and at the end of it when you get back to the car, give him a book about brewing. Then you can let him in on the kit or leave that as a Christmas...
