New Bottles - Do I need to brush them

I would not worry about brushing them as long as there is no "junk" stuck in them. Clean, Sanitize and fill!

    Old Flip Tops

If you soak them in oxyclean, take the metal clips off. If you don't, they may corrode.

    First experiment

I may change out the granny smith apples for some dissolved apple candies. The additional sugars should lead to an additional fermentation but hopefully leave the flavor behind. I sent an e-mail to the guys at Basic Brewing Radio offering to send them my results. Either way, this will be an...

    First experiment

I just brewed a Brewers Best Kolsch kit. Once the primary is done, I am going to transfer to one gallon jugs and try different flavors. Just looking for some advice or suggestions. So, for my gallon secondary batches, here is what I am planning. The possible batches. Batch 1: Going to...

Where do you folks put your beer?

If your talking carboys, in a corner, under table, in a closet, etc. Bottles, any spot you can find. If you use small (12 oz) bottles, see how much room you have under the bed. Maybe you can get some stands which will raise the bed high enough to fit the bottles or brewing supplies. I love...

advise me on making my own extract recipe

I am still doing extract kits myself. If your new to brewing, I would stick with kits that you can substitute (or add) one item in to see how it changes the taste.

Beginner - Need ideas on how to cool my wine during aging

I have only made three batches of wine but I aged the first two at about 60 - 65 and have my third in the basement at 62 right now. One of the keys is keeping the temp pretty steady. They have turned out great so far but maybe someone can chime in on what difference temps can make. Even with my...

Beginner - Need ideas on how to cool my wine during aging

Put it in a cool spot in the apartment. If it is not cool enough, try a fan, air conditioner. You can also do a search for "swamp cooler". In simple terms, you wrap the carboy in a towel or shirt and place it in a water (cooler or pan). The evaporating action of the water will lower the temp of...

    Blood Orange Hefeweizen

Mine is sitting around 70 - 72 degrees. I think my yeast was older (manufactured in 11/09) but I read something about it having a 6 month shelf life.

    Blood Orange Hefeweizen

I am starting a batch tomorrow. Had to modify the ingredients. Using 1/2 LME and 1/2 DME. Yep. My LHBS only had one can of LME but suggested adding some grains to it to fill out the body some.

    Sealing wine bottles

I use the plastic shrink seals. To shrink them up nice and neat, boil a teapot of water. Once the steam starts coming out, use the steam to "shrink" it up in about two seconds.

    Drunk Monkey Brewing

Thats funny. We call our small brewing place (aka. the closet) "Drunken Monkey Brewing". We use pretty basic labels but we do not put them on correctly. We put them on upside down, sideways, on angles, etc. When we get asked about it, we just respond "and you think a drunken monkey can put them...
