    Hop tea??

I was reading a Northern Brewer's recipe for an IIPA, and they call for boiling the wort and hops in separate vessels; then adding the "hop tea" to the wort at flame-out. What would the benefit of this be? Has anyone tried this and ended up with better results than just adding the hops to the...

    Mystery IPA

I have a gallon bag of Centennial leaf hops that I won at our home brew club meeting, so Kable's idea is a good one. I could bitter with those, since that's a great bittering hop. Then again, it IS homebrewing after all, and winging-it towards unknown results is a big part of the fun, so I...

    Mystery IPA

Does that mean it could be good or bad??? sorry...not familiar with WAG & SWAG.

    Mystery IPA

    I don't....if I had to guess I would think in the 8% - 10% range.

    Mystery IPA

I've got access to a brand new hop variety, that is yet un-named. It's grown here in Washington, so I'm guessing that it's probably close to the American "C" hops in flavor, aroma and alpha content. I'm going to churn out a 5 gallon batch using these new hops exclusively to get an idea of what...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Chipped away at the ice on my patio and shoveled some snow out of the way, and managed to cook up a Scottish Ale. Can't wait till March to taste it. First time trying a Scottish. I winged my own recipe......10lbs of Gold LME, some 120L, 40L, and Toasted Barley, Wyeast 1728 (with a 650ml...

    Sanitization after opening keg??

I have a clogged dip tube. After I pull it out and rinse it, does it need to be sanitized with Iodophor or something similar before reinstalling it, or is it OK with a water rinse?

    No Beer??

UPDATE! Clogged picnic tap was the culprit. I disassemble the quick-connect, gave it a super wash, and hop fragments busted loose. Got another oz or 2 of IPA out before it clogged with trub again. I took it apart and gave it another thorough cleaning; hooked it up to the Trippel, and the...

    No Beer??

The temp in the kezzer is holding steady @ 39. I'm thinking that it has to be the tap side quick-release fitting. I mail ordered this set-up and specified for a corny, but maybe it's a Firestone fitting?

    No Beer??

It is completely vexing me. Last night I managed to get one, single glass of Tripel out of one of the kegs. The beer was nicely carbed, and poured normally. "woo hoo" I thought. Tried to pour another........nothing; not even gas. I've had the gas on the IPA all night; nothing comes out of...

    No Beer??

Nope....there are on the correct sides. Is it possible that something in the quick connect of the "tap" side is set up incorrectly?? Clogging the release of the beer? I can get water to flow through the hose of the picnic tap, but not through the stubby "quick connect" part.

    No Beer??

Yep...sure of that. I'll try Yoopers suggestion. These are old "hand me down" kegs. I thought that I cleaned them rally well with PBW and a dip tube brush, but maybe the poppet valves are clogged?? (although I disassembled and cleaned them well too) F***!!! I really don't want to lose...

    No Beer??

Yeah...I hear gas rush into the keg. I got a dirty dribble outta the picnic tap; full of mucky stuff like you'd expect.....then nothing. I ran water from the sink through the open picnic tap, so I know that is not clogged. The 2 batches are very different; one is an IPA that probably has a...

    No Beer??

I kegged 2 batches at once last week. I switched the gas back and forth betwinxt the 2 for several days; starting @ 20 psi and dropping to 12. Anyway, I ran outta gas after 3 days (I don't think that I had the regulator tightened enough on the gas bottle). I hooked up a new bottle today, and...

How to make a yeast starter - Pictorial

a 5 gallon starter????? isn't that called a batch of beer?? Holy crap...are you planning on brewing 80 gallons of beer? A 700ml starter will work beautifully for a 5 gallon batch of beer. I'm sure others will say that it it may be sub-optimal, but with a 700ml starter you should have a lag...

    Scottish(ish) brew???

Yooper...yooo're right :-) Crystal 40, not carapils. I'll add a bit of darker grains, and skip the finishing hops. I'm hoping for something between a 80/- and a wee heavy. A mix of chocolate and 120 crystal added to the 40L sounds like a plan. Willamettes and Challangers @ 60, or just...

    Scottish(ish) brew???

I'm planning on brewing one last batch before winter. I've got a bunch of Willamette hops and a left-over pound of Carapils 40L. I've got 9lbs of gold LME on the way and a pack of Wyeast 1728. Might this come close to a Scottish ale? I'm planning on 1oz of Willamettes @ 60 minutes and an...

getting ready to brew my first batch!

If you have the means (i.e. a big brew-kettle and a propane burner or powerful stove) I would highly recommend that you do a full wort boil...much better results. Start with about 6 gallons of water and you'll end up with 5. The other big thing: Once you get your wort into the fermenter and...

    Favorite Extract Recipe?

Malty or hoppy?? I prefer hoppy brews; but goodness gracious, this Tripel extract kit is REALLY good, especially if you give it a good month or 2 in the secondary. BTW...use 2 packs of Wyeast 3787 with a nice big starter....yum...
