    Priming sugar and other questions

Does priming sugar change the bitterness of the beer? I have a 5 gallon batch of irish red ale from northern brewer that has just spent 4 weeks in primary. I took a hydrometer reading, and it's at 1.010. I tasted the beer from the hydrometer reading. It was pretty nice tasting up front...

    What happens to beer when.....?

I took the sample that I used to check the SG and refrigerated it in a cup for a day just to see how it cleared up. Afterwards, there was about a quarter inch of sediment in the bottom (it was colored green, which leads me to think it's hop pellet residue). Is it possible that the hops are...

    What happens to beer when.....?

After beer is done fermenting, when you leave it in the fermenter for a few more weeks, what exactly happens to the taste? I took a hydrometer reading of my Northern Brewer Irish Red Ale extract kit after 2 weeks in primary. It had a very bitter aftertaste. I plan on leaving it in primary for...

    Bottling my first batch soon

What's the easiest way without a vinator? How long does Starsan need to contact the bottles before I pour it out? Do I need to let them dry, or can I rack on top of whatever is left in there after I shake them out?

    Bottling my first batch soon

I have a few questions about bottling beer. I use starsan to sanitize the bottles. My plan is the following: Sanitize the bottling bucket (fill with 5 gal starsan) Using autosiphon and bottling wand, fill each of my 54 bottles with starsan Dump the rest of the starsan out of the...

    A couple of questions

    A couple of questions

I brewed my first batch of beer from an extract kit (Irish Red Ale from Northern Brewer) on 10/29/11. As of tomorrow it'll be about 2 weeks since I brewed the beer. As of today, there is no extra pressure in the airlock (i.e. for my s-shaped airlock, both sides of liquid are at the same...

    Brewing temperature questions

The ester off-flavors that you mentioned earlier...Aren't these appropriate for ales in some ways?

    Brewing temperature questions

Okay. So for next time, should I only do it the first 3-4 days? Or do I leave the fermenter in the water with the frozen gallons of water for all of primary?

    Brewing temperature questions

Yeah I should be able to do the gallon jug thing. Would it help at this point? Or should I just wait til the next batch?

    Brewing temperature questions

I have also heard of people freezing gallon jugs and putting them into the water (outside of the fermenter) to keep it cool. This seems like a whole lot of work lol. I would assume that there are strains of ale yeast that go up to 75 degrees? Maybe I should use one of those next time.

    Brewing temperature questions

Thank you. It's strange because it feels quite drafty and cold in my apartment. I even closed the vent that was above my fermenter. I suppose the yeast could be producing some heat.

    Brewing temperature questions

Well, since this is my first beer, Off- aromas are not a huge deal to me (as long as the aroma isn't like garbage or gym socks or something). I would be more worried about off-tastes. I moved the beer to another room. The thermometer reads 70 now. I should note as well that the thermometer I...

    Brewing temperature questions

I brewed the beer on Saturday. It started at around 68, rose to about 69-70 for a day and went to 72 yesterday. I just moved it to a colder room. Do you think I will have a lot of off flavers? Also, what do stonefruit esters taste like?

    Brewing temperature questions

Currently I am brewing a 5 gallon batch of irish red ale. The temperature reading on the side says 72 degrees, and the yeast I am using is Nottingham ale yeast. That yeast's optimal temperature is less than 70 degrees. Will this temperature difference have negative effects on my beer? How...

    Irish moss/ whirfloc

The wirfloc I am using comes in tablet form. Do I need to rehydrate these or do anything special? Or can I just drop it right in at 15 mins before the end of boil?

    Irish moss/ whirfloc

1 tsp is the right amount to use for a 2.5 gallon boil?

    Irish moss/ whirfloc

How does it work? How do I use it? I'm doing an extract kit from northern brewer, boiling 2.5 gallons and diluting to 5 gallons. I'm doing an Irish Red Ale
