Cold Crash Question. Pre- vs post-carbonation

Pretty much the same diff... your just "cold crashing" in the keg. If you cold crash in fermenter then you can transfer off 5g of "clear" beer but you risk introducing o2 if you don't have a way to mitigate that (pressurized fermenter, spunding, etc). if you transfer without cold crashing...

    Sight Glass Problems

Digging that style flow meter... no electronics. Going to get one so I can start to get solid numbers on my recirc rate besides just eyeballing it. It would be good to know at what rate i'll stick my mash. Not a fan of the manometer on the SS using two sight glasses because i imagine they'll...

How do you clean blow off tubing?

I generally just buy a 100ft rol of the cheapest tubing i can find. Then if a week of soaking in pbw doesn't do the trick i just toss it.

    Calibrate Refractometer with purified water?

I don't think OP means to boil the water down... the idea is to put the lid on, and the cup in the center of the pot. Then don't use the water that is sitting in the pot. Let it boil, steam condenses on the lid, then falls down into the "empty" cup. You only need a drop or two so this method...

Whirlpooling with heating coil in boil kettle?

I've found that elements don't really get in the way... particles will settle out in the center without any issues. Here's an IPA in a 20g spike pot with two elements "in the way".

    Brewing Salts in Herms HLT

two ways to go about that... 1) you can either fill your HLT and treat the entire quantity. This is usually easier to deal with... the draw backs are you will treat the entire quantity... which may be more than you need if you keep an extra gallon or two. You also can't easily "top up" if...

Which is more efficient? Plate Chiller or Counterflow?

You'll find a longer chiller more effective than a shorter one with more plates. The reason to get more plates is to have less restriction... you want length for more effective cooling. Unless your pumping at a high rate, or have extremely high water pressure then the 20 plate should be fine...

    Stout Stainless Counterflow Chiller

i do the same... recirc back into the kettle. however, the temp drop on the kegco one was not sig enough. i have 40degF water due to using an something similar to an icebath. i would get a good drop first few passss, 212degF to 130fegF, then tempz would drop to around 95-100 when inlet temps...

cinnamon and vanilla beans in a stout

I'll report back, but my research seemed to indicate 2 beans and 2 cin sticks in... also had lactose though. I've had 2 beans in a milkshake IPA and it was too much, but i'm thinking you may need a bit more for a stout (1.080sg)

    Stout Stainless Counterflow Chiller

yes sorry... the kegco one. Basically this: https://www.amazon.com/Kegcos-Stainless-Steel-Counterflow-Chiller/dp/B072LWNR73/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=kegco+stainless+cfc&qid=1582583709&sr=8-4 I liked this initially because it was stainless (lodo guys have a field day with copper stuff), no need for...

Preventing coils freezing jockeybox during travel

Thought about this too.. but i'm worried about the salt corroding the stainless... was looking up how much grain alcohol or salt i would need to add to lower the freezing point enough. Seems like just shopvac drying the lines after use is easier.

Preventing coils freezing jockeybox during travel

The problem is where to put the ice during travel... i would like to just put the 30-40lbs of ice in the cooler/jockeybox itself. If you do that and there is any water or sanitizer solution left over in the coils it'll freeze and cause serving problems (turbulence, co2 breakout, slow or...

    Stout Stainless Counterflow Chiller

Heads up on this.. i ended up getting the stout CFC as well. The tubes are smaller than 1/2" diameter and due to the length it provides considerable pressure drop. The fittings are 1/2", but the length and the diameter cause a significant drop in pressure. Using a pond pump to pump...

Preventing coils freezing jockeybox during travel

Point taken... but it's def not a sabco; i'm VERY cheap... it's a rig i welded up using steel and keggles i converted from craigslist finds. Thinking vinegar isn't a good idea in case the acetic acid ends up leaving a taste in the lines. But I don't want to spend $15 on vodka to leave in the...

Preventing coils freezing jockeybox during travel

I had thought about using a cheap spirit... just rinsing with vodka or grain alcohol when cleaning is done and storing. That way anything "left over" in the coils wouldn't be freezable. Vodka is also expensive, even the the plastic jogs on the bottom shelf. Maybe vinegar would work... it's...

Preventing coils freezing jockeybox during travel

Curious if there is any cheap solution to priming the jockey box with something that won't freeze for transport? I know you don't want to drop ice in the jockey box when it's empty in case any water is left over from cleaning is there and freezes blocking the coils. However; when traveling to...

Torpedo Keg Buoy - Floating Dip Tube

I've had a similar exp with the fermentasaurus onces... the little car-key style ring that attaches the weight to the little metal end can get caught in such a way that the float actually holds the end piece above the beer line. It binds up somehow if flipped around a certain way. I put some...

Torpedo Keg Buoy - Floating Dip Tube

I've got 4x of these and wanted to chime in on the leak.. dbl check the entire silicone hose. I had one that was showing bubbles when xfering from fermenter, and straight foam when transferring a spunded bear. Turns out the tube had store a little right at where it meets the post. Probably...
