Is this setup enough for all grain?

I brew 3 gallon batches on my stove top. I have a 5 gallon kettle, that easily holds a 4-gallon pre-boil volume. I live in a tiny cabin in the woods, and don't much care wrestling with heavy 5-gallon batches. It's perfect for me because I can do it all in the kitchen. With what you have now...

What do you call your brew system?

Homeplace Brewery. I live on Homeplace Drive. I know, not very original, but it was either that or Ye Olde Log Cabin Brewery...

    Christianity and home brewing

I’m Episcopalian (That’s a hop, skip, and a jump from Catholicism), and the folks at my church have no problem at all with drinking. In fact, it’s pretty usual that wine (as well as coffee, tea, etc) is served at church sponsored events, meet and greets, etc. However, most of...

    Lees on bottom of carboy

The yeast cakes in the ciders I make are often thicker and fluffier than my beer cakes, which tend to be more compacted. Then again, 3 to 5 gallons of beer weighs more than the 1 gallon ciders I make. In other words, your lees (yeast cake) is perfectly normal. And unless you're planning to age...

batch spargers - how long do you wait?

10 minutes is more than enough time to get residual sugars back into suspension. But conversion is done, so more time soaking at this point will not buy you anything.

    Caribou Slobber...

I had a very thick Krausen for 3 or 4 days, and it didn't fall completely until about 9 days. I'm now 21 days in primary and just checked the gravity: 1.009 and it tastes great! I'm going to leave in for a week more before I bottle as it's still a bit murky.

Old beer brewer, new to cider

Well, it's been about 5 days, and since I was checking the gravity of my 21 day old Caribou Slobber (1.009), I thought I would look at the cider too. OG was 1.051, currently is 1.017. It tastes quite good but very sweet and fizzy. I want it sweet, but not this sweet. I'll check again in a few...

    If you LOVE your job...

I love this thread, as it demonstrates quite admirably that brewers come from all walks of life. Beer brings the world together :) I also have a love-hate relationship with my job. I'm a pediatric respiratory therapist in a Children's Hospital. My job can be low-stress (Giving asthmatics or...

    Help With Thin Brew!

Rarely have I tasted a beer in the primary, secondary, or at bottling that gave me a really good indication of how it was going to taste or feel at the end. If, however you're still disappointed after it ages a bit in the bottle (or keg) then do as Calvey suggests and mash at a higher temp next...

Old beer brewer, new to cider

Thanks for the feedback everyone, it's given me something to think about for sure. Beer bottling (to me, anyway) is so much more straightforward. I usually leave my ales in the primary for a month and then bottle. I know it's done, and only take a FG reading for my notes. Tasting the cider...

Old beer brewer, new to cider

Hello all, I'm back into brewing after a long absence, and while I'm waiting for a new ale to condition, I thought I would experiment with cider. After all the reading I've done over the past few weeks, I have one nagging question. I'm starting as simply as I can, as I am interested in...

Occupying oneself while beer is fermenting

Also regarding Doctor Who, wouldn't brewing with the Tardis be a gas? Go back in time 6-8 weeks. Mash, boil, cool, pitch. Move forward a few weeks and bottle, come back to the present time and pop a cold one, all in ONE day :rockin:

Occupying oneself while beer is fermenting

If you're really looking for a distraction, than you may need to look to non-beer related activities. In my experience, making hop-tea, haunting forums, studying recipes, techniques.. nonstop and ad nauseam will only make you think about your bubbling fermenter all the more. It's good to have...

    Brewing again after 5 years!

Flars, Unfortunately I live in an old log-cabin in the woods that’s difficult to heat. With a kerosene heater running in the main room when I’m home, I can occasionally get the room up to 70, the kitchen maybe 66. I work nights, however, and can’t leave the heater on. When I get home in the...
