    What is whiskey?

    I think for moonshine they essentially make a corn beer ferment it with yeast and then heat this to whatever temperature alcohol turns to gas. The still captures the steam into another vessel. something along those lines:drunk:

    Agreed! I don't know how long your trips are going to be but carrying enough water for more than two days can be extremely heavy. I've been using the MSR Mini-Works filtration device and I've no problems with at all, it screws right onto a nalgene bottle. Man, I could talk backpacking for hours!

    if you are in the market for a new tent may I suggest the Hubba Hubba by MSR it's under five pounds 3 person 3 season. That's my next purchase. I just got a new sleeping bag this spring. Mountain Hardware 32 degree Down bag, this thing will almost stuff into a wide mouth Nalgene bottle...amazing!

    Newcomer with question on Carboy

    You could just scale down recipes to 4 gallon batches, that would be the easiest way. Or you could use a blow-off tube. I've never used one so I don't know if 5gs of brew in a 5g carboy can take that much blow!:confused:

    Thanks for the links Walker, the Kölsch looks good but I think the 1007 might produce something more along the lines of what I want out of this beer. Of course it will depend on what's available at the LHBS.
